Chapter 5 - WHAT RUTH CARRIED
Ruth answered her door in a robe and denied leaving home.
The police found her car engine warm.
They also found the black binder beneath a blanket in the trunk.
She began crying before they asked the second question.
Natalie had called her shortly after midnight.
She claimed I was about to burn family photographs during a breakdown.
She said the binder contained the only copies.
Ruth had believed enough of the lie to break into my house and enough of the truth to hide what she took.
I declined to press burglary charges that night.
Miriam was not pleased.
“Mercy without boundaries becomes permission,” she said.
“I know.”
“Do you?”
The question stayed with me.
Ruth came over the following afternoon.
Her apology lasted less than a minute before becoming an explanation.
“Natalie sounded terrified.”
“So was I.”
“I didn’t think you would be awake.”
“That does not make it better.”
She stared at the floor.
Then she admitted Natalie had promised to pay five thousand dollars toward her overdue mortgage.
The rescue story had only made the theft easier to justify.
“Where would Natalie get five thousand dollars?” I asked.
Ruth looked up.
“From the pension advance.”
There was no pension advance.
At least, there should not have been.
Miriam called the administrator while I listened.
An emergency lump-sum request for eighteen thousand dollars had been submitted with my forged electronic signature.
The payment was scheduled for Friday.
The bank account receiving it was not mine.
It belonged to a company called North Shore Family Services.
Adrien had registered the company two months earlier.
We stopped the transfer with six hours to spare.
That evening, Adrien left me a voicemail.
His voice was smooth again.
“Eleanor, this misunderstanding has gone far enough.”
He paused.
“Withdraw the fraud complaint, or Natalie will petition for guardianship.”

Then he added the sentence that made Miriam reach for a pen.
“And when the court sees your hospital records, the binder won’t matter.”
