Chapter 15 - FIRE AT THE GARAGE

Natalie did not pour gasoline on the house.

She poured it across a stack of boxes inside the garage.

They contained Michael’s original papers.

Calvin had told her the documents proved I caused her father’s death.

He ordered her to destroy them before police arrived.

The officer stopped her before she struck the match.

When I stepped outside, she screamed at me.

“You lied about him my whole life.”

“I protected you from an accident.”

“Calvin said Dad was leaving you.”

That lie hurt because it touched an old truth.

Michael and I had argued the night before he died.

He wanted to lend Calvin money from our home equity.

I refused.

Michael took the extra shift to earn it himself.

My guilt had never been about alcohol or murder.

It was about the last words I said to my husband.

“If you walk out to save Calvin again, do not expect me to wait awake.”

I had waited awake for thirty-one years.

Inside the boxes, police found the original workplace report.

Michael’s fall was caused by a forklift driven by Calvin.

Calvin had no license to operate it.

Michael took responsibility before losing consciousness because a conviction would have sent his brother back to prison.

The company buried the truth to avoid liability.

Calvin had spent decades blaming me for the sacrifice Michael made for him.

Natalie sank onto the driveway.

Her anger had nowhere left to go.

“Adrien said the papers would prove you killed Dad.”

“Adrien says whatever makes another person easier to control.”

She finally gave police the address of a storage unit where Adrien kept backup files.

Inside, investigators found the missing recordings.

They also found a typed schedule of my medications.

Beside three blood-pressure tablets, someone had written replacement dosages high enough to be dangerous.
