Chapter 10 - THE OLD ACCIDENT

My husband, Michael, had fallen from a loading platform during a winter storm.

The company blamed ice and inadequate lighting.

I blamed myself for asking him to take an extra shift.

The settlement paid our mortgage and Natalie’s future tuition.

I had never told her every detail.

The black binder contained only the settlement letter and death certificate because they explained the origin of several accounts.

Miriam obtained the archived investigation.

One witness had changed his statement.

The first version said Michael smelled of alcohol.

The final version removed that sentence after a blood test showed no alcohol.

Adrien had found the discarded draft and built a lie around it.

He planned to claim I concealed Michael’s addiction, misused the settlement, and suffered decades of guilt-related delusions.

It was cruel.

It was also weak evidence.

The real danger arrived at four that afternoon.

My bank froze every account.

Someone had presented the old power of attorney at three branches simultaneously.

One branch manager approved it before the fraud warning reached him.

Forty-seven thousand dollars left my savings.

It moved through North Shore Family Services and disappeared into six accounts.

Adrien had created the theft he intended to cite as proof that I could not manage money.

Miriam requested an emergency injunction.

The judge scheduled both matters for the next morning.

That night, I could not sleep.

I sat at the kitchen table where I had once helped Natalie with fractions.

I remembered her small hand holding a pencil.

I remembered telling her that numbers told the truth if people did not bend them.

At 1:03 a.m., an unknown number called.

Adrien spoke first.

“Withdraw your objections, and the money comes back.”

“Put Natalie on the phone.”

There was a long silence.

Then I heard my daughter crying in the background.

Adrien’s voice lowered.

May you like

“She made a mistake choosing you over me tonight.”

The call ended.
