Chapter 16 - THE TABLETS

My pharmacy had received a dosage-change request that morning.

It carried my doctor’s copied signature.

The order included home delivery.

If the pharmacist had not recognized my name, a bottle would have reached my porch before noon.

Adrien’s plan depended on routine.

I would take what the label instructed because I had trusted labels for forty years.

The result could be blamed on age, confusion, or the condition Natalie invented.

Police upgraded the investigation.

Adrien and Calvin became fugitives.

Natalie negotiated conditional release in exchange for cooperation.

She moved into a supervised residence and surrendered her passport.

She called me every evening.

I answered only when Miriam was present.

“Do you hate me?” she asked during the third call.

“No.”

“That makes it worse.”

“It should.”

She told us Adrien had targeted her after learning about my house and hospital pension.

His charm had been research.

His proposal had been access.

Their marriage had been a long transaction she mistook for love because he praised every resentment she carried toward me.

But Natalie did not pretend innocence.

She admitted forging the pension application.

She admitted impersonating me for the medical call.

She admitted filing the false protective-services report.

Each confession felt like watching a room in my home burn.

Then she revealed something unexpected.

She had made her own recording during the first visit.

Adrien ordered her to demand fifteen hundred dollars a month and provoke me into anger.

He wanted proof that I was unstable.

Instead, I had remained calm and produced the binder.

Her phone automatically uploaded the audio to a private account Adrien did not know about.

The file captured his words after they entered the car.

“If she won’t sign herself away,” he said, “we move to the medical plan.”

It was the direct evidence investigators needed.

There was only one problem.

May you like

Someone had logged into the account twelve minutes earlier.

The recording was being deleted as Natalie spoke.
