Chapter 1 - THE FIRST PAGE

Natalie opened the black binder with the confident smile of someone expecting a bank statement.
The smile vanished before she finished reading the first page.
At the top, in my careful handwriting, were the words: MONEY GIVEN TO NATALIE AND ADRIEN — NOT GIFTS.
Below them was a total.
One hundred eighty-six thousand four hundred dollars.
Adrien gave a short laugh.
“What is this supposed to be?”
“A record,” I said.
Natalie turned the page.
There were copies of tuition payments, rent transfers, car repairs, credit-card rescues, the wedding invoice, and the down payment I had made on their first house.
Beside every amount was the promise Natalie had made when she asked for it.
I’ll repay you next month.
We’ll sign something later.
This is the last time, Mom.
Adrien pushed the binder away.
“Families don’t keep receipts.”
“People planning to take my house do.”
Natalie’s eyes snapped toward me.
“No one is taking your house.”
I reached across the table and turned to the blue divider.
Behind it was a printed message Adrien had sent to a real-estate agent six weeks earlier.
The message described my address, estimated the renovation cost, and asked what the property could sell for after “the current occupant transitions into assisted living.”
Natalie’s face went white.
Adrien did not look surprised.
He looked angry that I had found it.
“You went through my private messages?” he demanded.
“You sent it to Sarah’s nephew,” I said.
“He recognized my address.”
Natalie slammed the binder shut.
“This is sick.”
“I agree.”
I pushed it back toward her.
“That is why you should keep reading.”
She stood so quickly that her knee struck the coffee table.
“We came here to discuss a fair family arrangement.”
“Then discuss this fairly.”
I opened the binder to the red divider.
The document beneath it carried my name.
It also carried a signature that looked almost like mine.
Almost.
It was an application giving Natalie authority over my pension deposits.
The submission date was three days earlier.
Natalie stared at the forged signature.
Adrien stared at Natalie.
For the first time since they entered my house, they were not acting like a team.
May you like
Then Adrien spoke very softly.
“You told me she signed it.”
