Chapter 12 - THE OTHER FAMILY

Chloe’s mother was named Vanessa Reed.

She lived ninety miles away and believed Adrien was a widower.

When Miriam called, Vanessa thought it was a scam.

Then she saw Adrien’s photograph outside the courthouse on the news website.

She drove directly to us.

Vanessa brought birthday cards, bank records, photographs, and fourteen years of promises.

Adrien had told her he would move in after settling an inheritance dispute with his late wife’s family.

There was no late wife.

There was Natalie.

Vanessa had received twenty thousand dollars that morning, not forty-seven.

Adrien kept the rest.

She agreed to testify that North Shore Family Services was not managing clients.

It was financing his secret life.

Back in court, the psychiatric clinic confirmed the evaluation number belonged to another patient.

The doctor’s electronic signature had been copied.

The judge excluded the document and ordered it referred for investigation.

Then Vanessa walked into the courtroom.

Adrien’s composure broke.

Natalie followed his gaze.

She saw the girl beside Vanessa.

Chloe had Adrien’s eyes.

No explanation was necessary.

Natalie stood in the middle of testimony.

“Who is she?”

The judge ordered her to sit.

She did not hear him.

“Adrien, who is that child?”

Adrien looked at his attorney.

His attorney looked away.

The guardianship petition collapsed within twenty minutes.

The judge found no evidence that I lacked capacity and substantial evidence that Natalie had abused legal process for financial gain.

He froze North Shore Family Services and prohibited Natalie and Adrien from acting on my behalf.

I should have felt victorious.

Instead, I watched my daughter discover that the man she helped rob me had been robbing her life too.

Outside court, Natalie approached me.

Her face was empty.

“Did you know about Chloe before today?”

“No.”

“Would you have told me?”

“Yes.”

She nodded slowly.

Then police officers stepped behind her.

One held a warrant for identity theft and attempted financial exploitation.

Natalie looked at me as the handcuffs closed.

“Mom, please fix this.”
