Chapter 4 - THE WELLNESS VISIT

The investigators expected confusion.

They found soup cooling on the stove, medication organized by date, bills paid early, and an attorney seated at my dining table.

The complaint alleged that I wandered at night, left burners on, misplaced money, and accused relatives of theft.

It also claimed that Sarah was manipulating me for access to my estate.

Miriam asked who filed it.

The investigator could not disclose the name.

She did not need to.

Only Natalie would know that accusing Sarah could isolate me from my strongest witness.

I answered every question.

I named the date, the president, my medications, my former supervisor, and the exact balance of my checking account.

Then I showed them the red section of the binder.

Their professional expressions changed.

The man photographed the forged pension form.

The woman asked whether I felt threatened.

“Not until my son-in-law promised to find everyone holding copies of my records.”

Miriam played the recording.

The investigators exchanged a glance.

They left after ninety minutes with a very different report from the one Natalie expected.

Before sunset, Natalie called.

“How could you show strangers our private family business?”

“You invited them.”

“I was worried about you.”

“You were worried I could still say no.”

Her breathing sharpened.

“You always make me the villain.”

“No, Natalie.”

“I finally stopped editing your actions into something kinder.”

She hung up.

At 2:14 the next morning, breaking glass woke me.

I stayed in bed and pressed the emergency button Sarah had helped me install.

Footsteps moved through the kitchen.

A cabinet opened.

Then another.

The intruder was not searching for jewelry.

He was searching for paper.

Police arrived within four minutes.

They found the lower cabinet open and the back door window shattered.

The black binder was gone.

Nothing else had been touched.

An officer asked whether I knew who might want it.

I looked at the empty space on the coffee table.

“Yes,” I said.

Then Sarah called from across the street.

Her security camera had captured the intruder’s car.

It belonged to Ruth.
