Chapter 13 - THE WORD PLEASE

I had fixed things for Natalie all her life.

I fixed the science project she forgot.

I fixed tuition when she lost a scholarship.

I fixed rent when she quit a job in anger.

I fixed debts, lies, broken friendships, and consequences.

Every rescue taught her that regret was the same as repair.

At the police station, she asked me to pay her bail.

I said no.

She asked me to hire a better lawyer.

I said no.

She asked me to tell investigators that the pension form had been a misunderstanding.

I stood to leave.

“Wait.”

For the first time, desperation stripped away her performance.

“Adrien made me do things.”

“Did he make you ask for half my pension?”

She looked down.

“Did he make you call me useless when I would not pay for your vacation?”

Silence.

“Did he make you leave me alone after surgery because I would not give you my bank password?”

Her tears came then.

They were real.

Real tears did not erase real choices.

“Tell the truth,” I said.

“All of it.”

She whispered that Adrien kept recordings of their plans.

He believed mutual guilt guaranteed loyalty.

The recordings were stored in a safe at his office.

The combination was Michael’s death date because Adrien enjoyed the cruelty of making Natalie use it.

Police searched the office.

The safe was empty.

Adrien had been released pending further investigation because the evidence directly tying him to the forged pension form remained incomplete.

His passport was gone.

So was Sarah’s missing phone.

That evening, I returned home under police escort.

The black binder sat on my kitchen table.

I had left it in Miriam’s locked office.

Someone had placed a white envelope on top.

May you like

Inside was a single sentence.

You kept records, Eleanor, but you forgot who taught Natalie how to lie.
