Chapter 20 - THE SHADOW ACCOUNT
The E.H. account was opened using my old hospital identification and a copy of Michael’s death certificate.
It received small transfers designed to look like consulting income.
Then the money moved into Natalie and Adrien’s mortgage.
On paper, I had been secretly financing their scheme.
If investigators had found the account before the forgeries, I could have appeared to be a partner.
Adrien had prepared a scapegoat in case the business collapsed.
The account-opening camera showed a woman wearing a gray wig.
Her face remained hidden.
Her hands did not.
On one finger was Ruth’s wedding ring.
Ruth confessed after two hours of questioning.
She had opened the account for Natalie, believing it would hide money from Adrien during a possible divorce.
Natalie had told a different lie to every person she recruited.
To Ruth, she was escaping an abusive husband.
To me, she was building a family.
To the court, she was protecting an unstable mother.
To Adrien, she was a loyal accomplice.
Perhaps she no longer knew which version was herself.
Ruth accepted a plea agreement and agreed to repay every dollar she received.
Our relationship did not survive.
Forgiveness, I learned, did not require renewed access.
Miriam helped the victims’ families combine their evidence.
The district attorney added racketeering and elder-exploitation charges.
Adrien’s polished confidence finally disappeared at arraignment.
Then his attorney made an offer.
Adrien would reveal where the missing money was hidden if prosecutors reduced the charges and if I signed a statement calling Natalie the architect of the entire scheme.
He was trying to escape through the woman who had helped him.
Natalie’s lawyer begged me not to respond.
I responded anyway.
I sent Adrien one photocopied page from the black binder.
It was a bank transfer he believed I had overlooked.
The routing number identified the country holding his money.
