Chapter 17 - SIXTY SECONDS

Leah had sixty seconds to stop the deletion.

She connected remotely while Natalie recited passwords from memory.

The progress bar reached ninety-three percent.

Leah restored the account through an administrator token Adrien had forgotten to revoke.

The audio survived.

So did a second file none of us expected.

It recorded Calvin and Adrien arguing in my garage during the break-in.

Calvin wanted the binder destroyed.

Adrien wanted it altered and returned so false pages could discredit everything.

Their partnership was failing.

The recording mentioned a marina and a boat called Second Chance.

Federal agents found the boat before dawn.

Calvin was aboard alone with cash, forged passports, and the original notary stamp.

He surrendered after a brief standoff.

Adrien had taken the second passport and left by road.

Calvin blamed him for everything.

He also claimed Adrien planned to retrieve “the real leverage” before crossing the border.

The leverage was a person.

Vanessa called minutes later.

Chloe had vanished on her way home from school.

Her backpack lay beside the bus stop.

Adrien texted Vanessa from a disposable number.

He wanted the evidence she had given Miriam.

He did not realize the originals were already secured.

Agents prepared a controlled exchange.

Vanessa insisted on carrying the envelope herself.

I understood her refusal to wait safely while her child was used against her.

I also understood the trap.

Adrien never intended to exchange Chloe.

He intended to remove the last witness who could prove North Shore Family Services funded his double life.

I studied the meeting location.

It was the abandoned loading facility where Michael died.

Calvin had chosen it.

He had not been abandoned by Adrien.

His arrest was part of the plan.

And from jail, Calvin could tell Adrien exactly where police would stand.
