Chapter 4 - THE LEDGER BENEATH THE FLOOR

Warehouse Seventeen stood beside the river like a black tooth.
The building had no company name on the exterior.
Only a faded number above a steel door.
Ronan arrived with two vehicles and six guards.
Ivy sat beside him in the back seat, staring at the brass key in her palm.
She had placed her mother's note inside her shirt because she no longer trusted pockets.
Declan met them at the entrance.
"Vane is inside."
"Dorian?" Ivy asked.
Declan shook his head.
Her hope collapsed.
"What did Vane say?"
"Nothing useful."
"Then ask better questions," Ronan said.
Declan's expression tightened.
"We have another problem."
He opened the steel door.
The warehouse lights flickered overhead.
Crates lined both walls.
Most were labeled as imported furniture.
The center aisle was empty except for a metal chair.
Elias Vane sat on it.
His wrists were secured in front of him with plastic restraints.
There was a bruise on his cheek.
Ivy looked at Declan.
"Did you do that?"
"No."
Vane laughed.
"She did."
Everyone turned.
Vivienne Hale stepped from behind a row of crates.
Ivy stopped breathing.
Two Blackwood guards stood with her.
Their weapons were lowered but ready.
Ronan's face became lethal.
"How did you leave the house?"
Vivienne smiled.
"You revoked my access."
She brushed imaginary dust from the sleeve of her white silk dress.
"You forgot Father's."
Augustus appeared behind her.
Alistair Blackwood walked beside him.
Ivy finally understood the third person with archive access.
Alistair wore a dark blue suit and a pleasant expression.
He looked nothing like Ronan except around the eyes.
There was the same cold patience.
But where Ronan's stillness felt controlled, Alistair's felt hungry.
"Nephew," he said.
"You picked an unpleasant hour for a family meeting."
Ronan stepped forward.
"Where is Dorian Lancaster?"
Alistair's eyebrows lifted.
"Who?"
Ivy wanted to hit him.
Augustus looked at her shoulder.
"You should be in a hospital."
"You should be answering questions."
Augustus smiled.
"The maid has developed courage."
Ronan moved before Ivy could respond.
He did not raise his voice.
"Call her that again."
Augustus looked at him.
"What?"
"I want to see how badly you misunderstand tonight."
The smile disappeared.
Vivienne stepped between them.
"This is ridiculous."
She pointed toward Vane.
"Father and I came because your men found him trespassing on Hale cargo."
Declan frowned.
"This is Blackwood property."
"Jointly controlled," Alistair said.
Ronan turned toward his uncle.
"Since when?"
Alistair's smile widened.
"Since your twenty-first birthday."
Ivy's heart began to pound.
Ronan did not move.
"Explain."
Alistair slipped a document from inside his coat.
"Your loyalty agreement."
Ivy stared at Ronan.
Alistair unfolded the paper.
"Schedule Four transferred operational control of twelve logistics properties into a special partnership."
"With Hale."
Ronan's voice was flat.
"Exactly."
"I never authorized that."
"Your signature did."
Ronan stepped closer.
"I was twenty-one."
"Old enough to inherit."
"Not old enough to understand what Gideon was hiding."
Alistair shrugged.
"The law rarely cares about understanding."
Ivy looked around the warehouse.
"What moves through here?"
Nobody answered.
She walked toward the nearest crate.
A guard blocked her.
Ronan's gaze snapped toward him.
"Move."
The guard hesitated.
Ronan's voice became colder.
"You work for me."
The guard looked at Alistair.
That single glance told everyone the truth.
Ronan nodded slowly.
"Not anymore."
Declan disarmed the guard in one smooth motion.
The second guard immediately stepped back.
Ivy opened the crate.
Inside were medical ventilator components.
She frowned.
"This isn't furniture."
Ronan lifted one box.
The manufacturer label had been scraped away.
Augustus looked bored.
"You brought us to a warehouse at midnight to inspect medical equipment?"
Ivy saw a date stamp.
Nine years old.
October.
Her stomach tightened.
She pulled another box free.
A small customs form remained attached underneath.
The consignee name read HALCYON RELIEF FOUNDATION.
Ronan went still.
"Halcyon."
Ivy looked at him.
"You know it?"
"My mother mentioned that name once."
Alistair's smile disappeared.
Ronan noticed.
"Interesting."
Augustus stepped forward.
"Old inventory proves nothing."
"Then you won't mind us searching the building."
"I do mind."
"Why?"
"Because you have no authority over Hale-controlled assets."
Ronan looked at Declan.
"Search it."
Augustus's face hardened.
"You are making a mistake."
"Add it to the list."
Ivy turned toward Elias Vane.
He had watched the conversation silently.
"Where is my brother?"
Vane looked at Augustus.
Ivy stepped closer.
"Look at me."
His eyes moved to her.
"Dorian has nothing to do with this."
Vane gave a small smile.
"Dorian had everything to do with this the second he opened the wrong car."
Ivy's heart stopped.
"What car?"
Vane said nothing.
She crouched in front of him.
"What did he see?"
Vane's smile faded.
"A ledger."
The word seemed to echo through the warehouse.
Ronan moved closer.
"Where?"
"A black sedan at Pearson Auto."
Ivy stared.
Dorian worked at Pearson.
"Whose car?"
Vane looked at Augustus.
"Not mine."
Augustus remained expressionless.
"Dorian found a book in the trunk," Vane said.
"He photographed three pages before putting it back."
Ivy's pulse roared in her ears.
"How did you know?"
"The car had an internal camera."
"Why didn't you take him then?"
"We tried to scare him first."
Vane's eyes shifted toward Ivy.
"He went looking for you instead."
"Where is he now?"
"I don't know."
Ivy stood.
"You're lying."
"No."
For the first time, Vane looked afraid.
"I delivered him."
"To whom?"
"I never saw the man's face."
Ronan's gaze sharpened.
"Where?"
"Old St. Vincent parking garage."
"Time?"
"Eight fifteen."
Ivy looked at Ronan.
That was before the riding crop struck her.
Before Ronan arrived.
Before she received the message.
The abduction had already happened.
Vivienne's public cruelty had not caused it.
It had covered it.
Ivy turned toward her.
"You knew."
Vivienne laughed nervously.
"Knew what?"
"The scene in the ballroom."
Ivy stepped closer.
"You needed everyone looking at me."
Vivienne's face changed.
"You're insane."
"Did your father tell you to do it?"
"I don't take orders from my father."
Augustus looked at his daughter.
It was only a glance.
But it was enough.
Ivy saw fear in Vivienne's eyes.
Ronan saw it too.
"Vivienne," he said softly.
She looked at him.
"Did Augustus tell you to create a distraction tonight?"
"No."
"Did he tell you Ivy had embarrassed you?"
Vivienne's lips parted.
"No."
"Did he arrange Mia's route?"
"I don't know."
"Did he tell you I would still be in Zurich?"
Vivienne went silent.
Ronan's expression sharpened.
"There it is."
Augustus stepped toward his daughter.
"Say nothing else."
Ronan smiled without humor.
"That was almost an answer."
A shout came from the rear of the warehouse.
Declan drew his weapon and ran.
Ronan followed.
Ivy went too despite the pain in her shoulder.
Behind a false wall, the security team had found a narrow office.
The room contained filing cabinets, an old safe, and a burned computer tower.
On the desk lay a framed photograph.
Ivy saw it before anyone else.
She walked closer.
Two women stood together in the photograph.
One was Eleanor Blackwood.
The other was Celeste Lancaster.
They were smiling.
Celeste wore no cleaning uniform.
She wore a gray business suit.
Between them on the table was a large black ledger.
Ivy touched the glass.
"Mom."
Ronan stared at his mother.
On the back of the photograph, four words had been written in Eleanor's hand.
TRUST CELESTE WITH EVERYTHING.
Ivy turned slowly toward Augustus.
He was no longer smiling.
For the first time, she saw what Celeste and Eleanor must have seen nine years ago.
Not a businessman.
May you like
Not a political donor.
A man terrified of a book.
