Chapter 23 - NOTHING LEFT TO BARGAIN WITH

The board removed Augustus Hale from all Blackwood-linked lender committees before the hearing ended.

Crown National suspended two executives connected to the fraudulent transfers into Ivy's name.

Federal prosecutors froze sixty-seven Halcyon successor accounts.

Three former clinic directors were arrested within forty-eight hours.

Two judges named in the ledger recused themselves from related cases.

A state medical board opened emergency investigations.

The machine did not collapse all at once.

It began losing screws.

Augustus left the auditorium through a side door surrounded by attorneys.

Vivienne was waiting in the car.

"Tell me you have a plan."

Augustus looked at his daughter.

For the first time in her life, he looked at her without affection, impatience, or pride.

He looked at her as an expense.

"You were supposed to keep Ronan attached to the family."

Vivienne stared.

"I did for two years."

"And lost him to a housekeeper in forty-eight hours."

Her face flushed.

"Ivy manipulated him."

"No."

Augustus's voice sharpened.

"You made her important by treating her like an enemy before she had power."

Vivienne looked away.

"What now?"

"Now we leave."

"The country?"

"Tonight."

Vivienne's eyes widened.

"You said the recordings could be challenged."

"They can."

"Then why run?"

Augustus looked toward the federal vehicles parked across the street.

"Because Alistair gave them the offshore path."

Vivienne went pale.

"How much did they find?"

"Enough."

"And my accounts?"

Augustus did not answer.

"Father."

"Your personal trusts are already restrained."

Vivienne stared at him.

"You told me they were protected."

"Nothing is protected after someone hands federal agents the map."

The words tasted like defeat.

Vivienne had never seen it on him before.

She hated Ivy more for that than for the ballroom.

At Blackwood House, Ivy packed the last of her belongings from the staff room.

She had returned voluntarily.

Not as an employee.

Ronan had offered to restore her position.

She declined.

"I don't know who I am after this," she told him.

"But I know I am not going back to folding Vivienne's napkins."

Ronan had smiled faintly.

"Fair."

Now Ivy found an old envelope beneath her mattress.

Inside was the first pay stub she had received from Blackwood House.

She remembered what that money meant then.

Theo's school fees.

Dorian's car repair.

Groceries.

A little breathing room.

She had once believed money was safety.

Then Hale froze her accounts in a morning.

She had believed employment was stability.

Then Vivienne terminated her with an email.

She had believed invisibility might protect her.

Then she learned her family had been watched for eleven months.

Ivy folded the pay stub and placed it in her bag.

Not as nostalgia.

As evidence of who she had been before power noticed her.

Dorian entered.

"Celia called."

"What happened?"

"Augustus missed a scheduled interview."

Ivy turned.

"He's running."

"Looks like it."

"Vivienne?"

"Gone from her apartment."

Ivy's jaw tightened.

Ronan appeared in the doorway.

"Airport watch is active."

"Private airfields?" Ivy asked.

"All known ones."

Dorian laughed without humor.

"Known ones."

Ronan looked at him.

"You have a better idea?"

"Pearson Auto serviced an old Hale Bentley last year."

"And?"

"Driver talked too much."

Dorian pulled out his phone.

"Said Mr. Hale hated city airports because cameras were everywhere."

"Where did he fly?"

"Old agricultural strip in Carrow County."

Ronan's expression sharpened.

"That's not in Hale records."

"Because the land belongs to a horse-breeding company."

Ivy looked at him.

"Vivienne rides."

The riding crop flashed through memory.

Dorian nodded.

"Exactly."

Ronan called Declan.

Federal agents reached the Carrow County airstrip forty-three minutes later.

The Hale jet was there.

Augustus was not.

The pilot had been instructed to file a flight plan as a decoy.

Vivienne's luggage sat in the cabin.

So did twelve million dollars in bearer instruments.

But no Hales.

Ivy stared at the photographs Declan sent.

"He wants us looking outward."

Ronan nodded.

"Then they're still in the city."

Dorian frowned.

"Why?"

Ivy thought of Vivienne.

White silk.

Diamond ring.

The need to win even when winning no longer meant anything practical.

"Because Vivienne isn't finished."

Ronan's phone rang.

His face changed when he saw the caller.

"Who?" Ivy asked.

"Vivienne."

He answered on speaker.

"Where are you?"

Vivienne laughed softly.

"You used to ask that differently."

"This isn't nostalgia."

"No."

Her voice changed.

"It's closure."

Ivy went cold.

Vivienne continued.

"Bring Ivy to the ballroom tomorrow at eight."

Ronan's face hardened.

"No."

"Then Father releases Celeste's original Halcyon design documents to every news outlet in the country."

Ivy frowned.

"Do it."

Silence.

Vivienne heard her.

"Of course you're there."

"Release them."

"They prove your mother built the system."

"I know."

Vivienne paused.

"They will destroy her reputation."

Ivy looked at Dorian.

Then at Ronan.

"No."

Her voice steadied.

"They'll make her human."

Vivienne went silent.

Ivy continued.

"She designed a tracking system."

"She made a mistake."

"She discovered what it became."

"She tried to stop it."

"Then your father killed her."

Ivy breathed slowly.

"I don't need my mother to have been perfect for what you did to be wrong."

Ronan looked at her with something like awe.

Vivienne's voice sharpened.

"You think people will understand nuance?"

"Some won't."

"Then you lose her legacy."

"No."

Ivy looked at the old pay stub in her hand.

"I lose control of the story."

Her voice became calm.

"That's different."

Vivienne had no response.

For the first time, she had nothing Ivy needed.

No job.

No money.

No reputation.

No engagement.

No threat against Celeste's memory.

Nothing left to bargain with.

Vivienne breathed into the phone.

Then she whispered,

"Come anyway."

The line went dead.

Dorian shook his head.

"Absolutely not."

Ivy looked toward the ballroom corridor.

"I'm going."

"Ivy."

"She asked for the room where she thought she could hurt me because nobody would move."

May you like

Ivy picked up her bag.

"I want her to see what changed."
