Chapter 18 - THE BRIDE RETURNS

Ronan walked downstairs the next morning without assistance.

He was pale.

He was furious.

And he was officially still considered medically questionable by the board.

Vivienne waited in the breakfast room wearing cream silk and the Blackwood signet ring.

When Ronan entered, she smiled.

"You look better."

"You look comfortable."

"I am."

She poured coffee.

"It suits me."

Ronan sat opposite her.

"The house?"

"Authority."

"Temporary authority."

Vivienne smiled.

"Most authority is temporary."

She pushed a cup toward him.

Ronan looked at it.

"You first."

Her smile vanished.

Then she laughed.

"Very funny."

"I wasn't joking."

She drank.

Ronan waited.

Vivienne rolled her eyes.

"Satisfied?"

"No."

"You never are."

Ronan leaned back.

"I want to make the reconciliation permanent."

Vivienne went still.

"What?"

"Marriage."

For the first time since taking control, she looked uncertain.

"You threw me out two days ago."

"Two days ago I thought I could survive without Hale credit."

"Ivy changed that."

Ronan's face became bitter on command.

"Ivy changed more than that."

Vivienne studied him.

"What happened?"

"She gave the Halcyon evidence to federal agents."

That much was true.

"Without my permission."

Also true.

"And now?"

"Now Blackwood faces seizure, board revolt, and criminal exposure."

True again.

Ronan had learned from Augustus that the strongest lie was built almost entirely from facts.

Vivienne's eyes narrowed.

"You blame her."

Ronan said nothing.

Vivienne smiled slowly.

"Finally."

"Do not enjoy it too much."

"I told you she was using you."

Ronan looked away.

"Perhaps."

That single word did more than any performance could have.

Vivienne leaned forward.

"What are you proposing?"

"A private ceremony tomorrow night."

"Tomorrow?"

"Before the board's final vote."

"Here?"

"In the ballroom."

Vivienne's smile returned fully.

"Of course."

She touched the signet ring.

"Where she embarrassed me."

Ronan looked at her.

"Where you embarrassed yourself."

The smile tightened.

He continued.

"Augustus signs a debt standstill."

"He will."

"You withdraw the incapacity action."

"After the vows."

"Before."

Vivienne shook her head.

"You don't trust me."

"Should I?"

She considered that.

"No."

At least she was honest.

"Then before."

"Fine."

Ronan stood.

Vivienne's voice stopped him.

"And Ivy?"

His shoulders stiffened exactly as he intended.

"What about her?"

"I want her charged."

"Not part of the deal."

"Then she leaves the city."

"No."

Vivienne's expression sharpened.

"You still protect her."

Ronan turned.

"I don't want a martyr."

Another truth-shaped lie.

"If you touch Ivy now, every camera in the country will ask why."

Vivienne considered it.

"Fine."

She smiled.

"She can watch me become Mrs. Blackwood from whatever cheap apartment she is hiding in."

Ronan walked out before hatred ruined his expression.

He met Ivy that afternoon in an underground parking garage beneath Celia's office.

It was the first time they had seen each other since the kiss.

Ivy noticed how slowly he moved.

"You should be in bed."

"I tried it."

"And?"

"Boring."

She almost smiled.

Then she saw the small velvet ring box in his hand.

Her face changed.

"You brought a prop."

"Celia said details matter."

"Celia is enjoying this too much."

"She is billing by the hour."

Ivy folded her arms.

"Does Vivienne believe you?"

"Enough."

"Augustus?"

"No."

"Good."

Ronan frowned.

"Good?"

"Arrogant men are easier when they think they are the only suspicious person in the room."

Ronan smiled faintly.

"You are becoming frightening."

"I had excellent teachers."

The smile disappeared.

Ronan looked at her shoulder.

The wound was healing beneath a clean bandage.

"Does it hurt?"

"Sometimes."

"I'm sorry."

Ivy looked at him.

"For which part?"

"That I didn't see what Vivienne was before she made you bleed."

The apology was simple.

No excuse followed.

Ivy nodded.

"Don't make me comfort you for it."

"I won't."

"Good."

They stood in silence.

Then Ronan handed her a folder.

"My full statement."

Ivy frowned.

"To whom?"

"Federal investigators."

She opened it.

The document contained Halcyon disclosures.

The loyalty agreement.

The post-Gideon settlement resolution.

And something new.

Ivy read the paragraph twice.

"What is this?"

Ronan's face became still.

"Seven years ago, I ordered two men to pressure a union organizer at one of our docks."

Ivy looked up.

"Pressure how?"

"I told them to make him afraid enough to leave the city."

"What happened?"

"They beat him."

Ivy went cold.

"Did he survive?"

"Yes."

"Did you know what they did?"

"The next morning."

"And?"

Ronan's jaw tightened.

"I paid his medical bills through a shell account and had the men removed from payroll."

"Did you go to police?"

"No."

Ivy stared at him.

"You covered it up."

"Yes."

"Why are you telling me now?"

"Because Augustus knows."

Ivy laughed once, bitterly.

"So this is insurance before he exposes you."

"Partly."

"What's the other part?"

Ronan met her eyes.

"You said not to stand with me because I am powerful."

He nodded toward the statement.

"You should know what that power has done."

Ivy closed the folder.

She felt sick.

Not shocked.

That was worse.

Some part of her had known Ronan Blackwood did not become the most feared man in the city through calm conversation alone.

But knowledge at a distance was different from a signed confession in her hands.

"I don't know what this makes us," she said.

"Neither do I."

"If the organizer wants to press charges?"

"I won't fight him."

"If prosecutors charge you?"

"I won't run."

"If you lose Blackwood?"

Ronan looked toward the concrete ceiling.

"Then I learn to drive myself more often."

Ivy almost smiled.

She didn't.

"The wedding trap still happens."

"Yes."

"Even if Augustus exposes this."

"Especially then."

Ivy handed the folder back.

"Good."

Ronan looked surprised.

"That's all?"

"No."

She stepped closer.

"When this is over, you don't get to use helping me as proof that you are a good man."

His face tightened.

"I know."

"You don't get to use your father as proof you're better."

"I know."

"And you don't get to decide whether the man at the dock forgives you."

"I know."

Ivy nodded.

"Then tomorrow we finish Halcyon."

Ronan watched her walk away.

For the first time in his life, the person whose respect mattered most to him had refused to give it cheaply.

He understood that as a gift.
