Chapter 13 - FORTY-EIGHT HOURS

Vivienne escaped St. Vincent Medical Center in a stolen nurse's coat and a black sedan registered to a Hale security contractor.

By the time Ronan's team reached the street, the car was gone.

Dorian survived the tampered IV because Dr. Reed recognized the reaction quickly.

The hospital moved him to a secure intensive observation wing.

Ivy stopped feeling afraid of Vivienne after that.

Fear burned away.

What remained was clarity.

Vivienne had not merely lost control in the ballroom.

She had chosen cruelty before.

She had chosen it again in a hospital room.

And she had done both because she believed consequences were things that happened to poorer people.

Ronan stood outside the ICU doors with bloodless knuckles clenched at his sides.

"I should have had her arrested at the house."

Ivy looked at him.

"Yes."

He turned.

She did not soften it.

"You treated her like a dangerous fiancée instead of a dangerous person."

Ronan's face tightened.

"Yes."

"Because part of you still thought she belonged to your world and I didn't."

"That's not fair."

"No."

Ivy's voice remained quiet.

"It isn't."

She looked through the ICU glass at Dorian.

"Neither is any of this."

Ronan had no defense.

He stopped trying to make one.

At 5:00 p.m., Celia arrived with worse news.

"The board meeting has been moved forward."

"When?" Ronan asked.

"Tomorrow at eight."

"Why?"

"Hale lenders issued notices of default."

Celia handed him a folder.

"You have forty-eight hours to cure the cross-default provisions or Blackwood Holdings loses access to its primary credit facilities."

Ivy frowned.

"Translate."

Celia looked at her.

"If Hale follows through, payroll for several operating companies becomes uncertain within two weeks."

"Thirty-eight thousand workers."

"Yes."

Ronan looked toward the city skyline through the hospital window.

"And Augustus's solution is still Vivienne."

"Yes."

"Marriage restored."

"Publicly."

"What else?"

Celia hesitated.

"Withdrawal of all Halcyon disclosures."

Ivy laughed bitterly.

"There it is."

"And transfer of compliance authority to a joint Blackwood-Hale committee."

"Meaning Augustus."

"Essentially."

Ronan took the folder.

"Schedule a meeting."

Ivy looked at him.

"With Augustus?"

"Tonight."

Celia nodded.

"Where?"

Ronan's eyes moved to Ivy.

"The Blackwood ballroom."

She understood immediately.

"You want him comfortable."

"I want him arrogant."

Ivy's voice hardened.

"Those aren't the same thing."

"With Augustus they are."

The meeting began at nine.

The ballroom had been cleaned.

The blood was gone from the marble.

The orchestra chairs had been removed.

Only one long table remained beneath the chandeliers.

Augustus Hale entered with three lawyers.

Vivienne was not with him.

Ronan noticed.

"Where is your daughter?"

Augustus sat.

"Recovering from emotional distress."

Ivy almost laughed.

She stood behind a service door listening through an audio feed.

Augustus did not know she was there.

Ronan sat opposite him.

"Your daughter entered a hospital disguised as a nurse."

"Allegedly."

"She was seen by six cameras."

"Then I assume you will show them to police."

Ronan leaned back.

"Perhaps."

That word changed Augustus's posture.

"Perhaps?"

Ronan let silence work.

Augustus smiled.

"Now we are talking like adults."

Behind the door, Ivy clenched her jaw.

Ronan continued.

"I have a company to protect."

"You have a legacy to protect."

"Same thing."

"Not always."

Augustus folded his hands.

"But I am pleased grief has not made you completely foolish."

Ronan's voice remained flat.

"Terms."

Augustus's smile widened.

"Vivienne returns to Blackwood House."

"No."

"Then we are finished."

Ronan stood.

Augustus remained seated.

"Thirty-eight thousand employees, Ronan."

Ronan stopped.

"You have plants in six states."

Augustus continued.

"Hospitals waiting for shipments."

"Do not pretend you care about hospitals."

"I care about leverage."

Behind the door, Ivy heard the admission.

Celia recorded everything from an adjacent room.

Augustus continued.

"You have forty-eight hours before lenders move."

"And if I agree?"

"The debt notices vanish."

"Halcyon?"

"Buried."

"The ledger?"

"Destroyed."

"Ivy Lancaster?"

There was a pause.

Ivy stopped breathing.

Augustus spoke casually.

"The fraud complaint proceeds."

Ronan's chair scraped the floor.

"No."

"Then why are we here?"

"She is protected."

Augustus laughed.

"By whom?"

Ronan's voice became cold.

"Me."

Ivy felt something dangerous in the word.

Augustus heard it too.

"Careful."

"You really should find another word."

"You are willing to bargain for the company but not the maid."

Ronan leaned forward.

"Her name is Ivy Lancaster."

"I know exactly who she is."

Augustus's tone changed.

Behind the door, Ivy felt her pulse accelerate.

Ronan heard it too.

"Meaning?"

Augustus smiled.

"Meaning her mother was more dangerous than yours."

"Because she had the ledger?"

"Because she understood the architecture."

"You killed her."

Silence.

Augustus did not deny it.

He simply said,

"Your father solved a problem."

Ivy's hands began to shake.

Ronan's voice remained unnaturally calm.

"Did he order the crash?"

Augustus looked toward the chandeliers.

"Gideon did not give operational orders himself."

"Who did?"

"You know who managed logistics."

Alistair.

Ivy closed her eyes.

Ronan pressed.

"And Eleanor's plane?"

Augustus's chair creaked.

"That was different."

"How?"

"Your mother made the mistake of believing blood would protect her."

A long pause.

"It didn't."

Ivy realized Augustus had just said enough to destroy himself if the recording survived.

Then the ballroom lights went out.

The audio feed died.

Ivy heard shouting.

The service door slammed open.

A hand grabbed her from behind.

She drove her elbow backward.

The man cursed.

Ivy twisted free and ran into darkness.

Emergency lights came on five seconds later.

Ronan was across the ballroom fighting one of Augustus's security men.

Celia shouted from the balcony.

"Recording system is offline!"

Augustus stood near the far door.

He looked directly at Ivy.

He knew.

"You should have stayed invisible," he said.

Ivy ran toward the hidden recorder cabinet.

The local device had been ripped from its mount.

Gone.

Augustus smiled.

Then every Blackwood staff member in the ballroom lifted a phone.

Ivy stared.

Agnes stood among them.

"You forgot the house," she said.

May you like

Twenty-three separate personal recordings were still running.

Augustus's smile disappeared.
