Chapter 10 - THE NAME IN THE LEDGER

The Blackwood library had seen murders planned, marriages negotiated, elections purchased, and fortunes divided.
That morning, it became a crime scene of a different kind.
Celia photographed every page of the ledger.
Declan sealed the original inside a tamper-evident evidence bag.
Ronan ordered nobody to leave the room until two independent copies existed outside Blackwood-controlled systems.
Ivy sat beside Dorian on the sofa.
Theo slept upstairs under Agnes's watch.
For the first time in nearly twelve hours, both her brothers were physically safe.
Emotionally, none of them were.
"Illegal trials," Dorian said.
His voice sounded hollow.
"On what?"
Celia turned another page.
"Experimental cardiac drugs."
Another page.
"Unapproved immune therapies."
Another.
"Pain medications."
Ivy stared.
"Who were the patients?"
Celia swallowed.
"Mostly uninsured people routed through charity clinics."
Ronan's face hardened.
"Halcyon Relief Foundation."
"Yes."
"How many?"
"The ledger lists four hundred and eighty-three case numbers."
Nobody spoke.
Ronan looked suddenly ill.
"My father funded this."
Celia did not soften the answer.
"His companies moved the money."
Dorian laughed bitterly.
"And Hale provided the clinics."
Celia nodded.
"It appears so."
Ivy turned to page 117 again.
There was one entry she had not noticed before.
LANCASTER, CELESTE.
Her breath stopped.
Beside her mother's name was no payment amount.
Only a notation.
AUDITOR - UNAUTHORIZED COPY.
STATUS: REPORTING FEDERAL.
Then a second line.
ACCIDENT PROTOCOL AUTHORIZED.
Ivy could not move.
Dorian saw it.
"What?"
She pointed.
Dorian read the words.
His face crumpled.
"No."
Theo was not there to hear.
For that Ivy was grateful.
Ronan stood behind them.
He read the line in silence.
"Authorized by whom?" Ivy whispered.
Celia examined the code beside the notation.
"G.B."
Everyone knew.
Gideon Blackwood.
Ivy's grief became something hard enough to stand on.
She looked at Ronan.
"Your father ordered my mother's death."
Ronan did not look away.
"That's what this says."
"Say it."
Dorian looked at her.
"Ivy."
"No."
She stood.
"I want him to say it."
Ronan's face was devastated, but his voice remained steady.
"My father appears to have authorized the operation that killed Celeste Lancaster."
Ivy nodded once.
There were no tears.
Not yet.
"And your mother?"
Celia searched the ledger.
ELEANOR BLACKWOOD appeared fourteen pages later.
The notation was different.
INTERNAL FAMILY EXPOSURE.
TRANSFER TO G.B. FOR RESOLUTION.
Then one handwritten addition in Celeste's script.
ELEANOR DOES NOT KNOW GIDEON SAW THE COPY.
Ronan stared at the words.
His hands began to shake.
Ivy had never seen that before.
He sat down slowly.
"He knew."
Nobody answered.
"My father knew my mother had the ledger."
Ronan looked toward the hidden safe in the other wing as though he could see through walls.
"He sent me to court that morning."
Ivy's anger paused.
"Why?"
Ronan's face changed as memory assembled itself.
"To establish an alibi."
Celia frowned.
"For you?"
"For the family."
Ronan stood abruptly.
"He brought me into a courthouse at eight in the morning, had me sign documents in front of officials, and kept me there until after noon."
His voice became colder.
"Then Celeste died at four thirty-seven."
Ivy understood.
"If anyone later accused Blackwood, your presence in a public building made the family look cooperative and legitimate."
"And made me a witness to the company's supposedly legal operations."
Ronan stared at the ledger.
"He used me."
Dorian laughed bitterly.
"Welcome to the club."
Ronan accepted that too.
Celia turned another page.
"There's more."
Nobody wanted more.
There was always more.
"The settlement accounts continued after Gideon died."
Ronan's eyes narrowed.
"What?"
"Payments were made last month."
"From where?"
"Halcyon successor funds."
"Authorized by?"
Celia traced the code.
"A.B."
Ivy looked at Ronan.
Alistair.
Or Augustus Bernard Hale.
Again.
Dorian leaned forward.
"There has to be a way to tell which one."
Celia examined the transaction key.
"Maybe."
She typed into her laptop.
"Each internal authorization used a two-part signature."
"Meaning?" Ivy asked.
"One family code and one operational code."
Celia looked up.
"A.B. isn't one person."
The room went still.
"It's two."
Ronan understood.
"Alistair Blackwood."
Ivy finished.
"And Augustus Bernard Hale."
The conspiracy was not a choice between them.
They were partners.
The midpoint truth was worse than any of them had expected.
Gideon Blackwood had created Halcyon.
Augustus Hale had operated it.
Alistair Blackwood had kept it alive after Gideon's death.
Vivienne had grown up inside the protection that money purchased.
And Celeste and Eleanor had died trying to expose it.
Ronan walked to the fireplace.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he removed a signet ring from his right hand.
The Blackwood crest was carved into black onyx.
He set it on the table beside the ledger.
Ivy looked at him.
"What are you doing?"
"Ending the inheritance my father expected."
"A ring doesn't change what your companies did."
"I know."
"A speech won't either."
"I know."
He turned toward Celia.
"Prepare full disclosure to federal prosecutors."
Celia stared.
"Everything?"
"Everything tied to Halcyon."
"That will expose Blackwood Holdings."
"Yes."
"It could trigger asset seizure."
"Yes."
"Board removal."
"Yes."
"Criminal investigation into your signature on the original certification."
Ronan looked at Ivy.
"Yes."
The room went silent.
Celia slowly nodded.
"I'll prepare it."
Ronan's phone rang.
The caller ID showed VIVIENNE.
He almost ignored it.
Ivy spoke.
"Answer."
Ronan did.
"What?"
Vivienne's voice came through the speaker.
She sounded calm.
Too calm.
"I heard you found Mother's little book."
Ivy's head snapped up.
Ronan's face hardened.
"Your mother?"
Vivienne laughed softly.
"Not mine."
"Then whose?"
"Eleanor's."
A pause.
"You really should stop assuming the dead women were always on the same side."
Ivy felt the warning immediately.
"What does that mean?"
Vivienne heard her voice.
"Hello, Ivy."
"What does it mean?"
"It means your mother was not merely an auditor."
Ivy gripped the table.
"What was she?"
Vivienne's voice sharpened.
"The person who designed the system."
Silence.
Dorian stood.
"She's lying."
Vivienne continued.
"Ask Celia to turn to page three."
Celia opened the ledger.
Page three contained the founding signatures for Halcyon's internal financial architecture.
Gideon Blackwood.
Augustus Hale.
Alistair Blackwood.
And Celeste Lancaster.
Ivy stopped breathing.
Beside Celeste's name was a title.
CHIEF FINANCIAL ARCHITECT.
Vivienne's voice came through the phone.
May you like
"Still think your mother was only the hero?"
The line went dead.
