Chapter 17 - THE ROOM BEHIND THE BALLROOM

Ivy did not look at the pistol.
She looked at Alistair's face.
Men like him noticed fear the way dogs noticed blood.
So she gave him boredom.
"You talk too much."
Alistair blinked.
Agnes stared at Ivy as though she had lost her mind.
Alistair smiled.
"Your mother said that once."
"Did you shoot her for it?"
His smile vanished.
"No."
"Did you give Gideon her route?"
Alistair leaned against the doorframe.
"You keep asking the wrong question."
"Then educate me."
"The route was not supposed to kill her."
Ivy felt her stomach tighten.
"What was it supposed to do?"
"Stop her car."
"Why?"
"Recover the ledger."
"And then?"
"Convince her to leave the country."
Ivy laughed coldly.
"With what? A polite brochure?"
Alistair's jaw shifted.
"Gideon changed the order."
"And you obeyed."
"I was not there when the car was hit."
"But you gave them the road."
Silence.
"Yes," Alistair said.
The word was quieter than Ivy expected.
Agnes closed her eyes.
Ivy's voice remained steady.
"What about Eleanor?"
Alistair looked toward the old recording equipment.
"That was not Gideon."
Ivy's pulse jumped.
"Who?"
Alistair smiled faintly.
"You already know."
"Augustus."
"He arranged the maintenance error on her plane."
Agnes made a small sound.
Ivy felt cold fury spread through her.
"Why are you telling me?"
"Because Augustus is about to bury both of us."
"Us?"
"You think this ends with Hale losing a bank vote?"
Alistair stepped into the room.
"He is emptying Halcyon's final reserve accounts tonight."
"Where is the money going?"
"Offshore."
"Why do you care?"
"Because my name is on everything."
Ivy almost laughed.
"Now you discover morality."
"No."
Alistair's honesty was chilling.
"I discover self-preservation."
He gestured toward the locked crate.
"That contains the original operational records."
"Why bring them here?"
"Vivienne thinks she is moving them for destruction."
"And you?"
"I switched the crate."
Ivy frowned.
"With what?"
"Blank files."
"Why?"
"Because I need insurance against Augustus."
"You need immunity."
"Same family of word."
Ivy looked at Agnes.
Then at the phone hidden inside her sleeve.
Dorian was still connected.
He had heard everything.
Alistair noticed her glance.
"Give me the phone."
Ivy smiled.
"Which one?"
Alistair's eyes sharpened.
At that exact moment, the ballroom lights on the other side of the wall turned on.
Music began.
Vivienne was testing the room for another event.
Alistair looked toward the wall.
Ivy moved.
She shoved the nearest dust-covered recording cart into him.
The pistol struck the floor.
Agnes kicked it beneath a shelf with surprising force.
"Forty-one years," she said.
"I have wanted to do something like that for at least thirty."
Alistair lunged for Ivy.
She stepped aside.
His shoulder hit the table.
The locked crate shifted.
Dorian shouted through Ivy's hidden phone.
"Security is coming!"
Alistair heard him.
He stopped.
Then he laughed.
"You finally learned to use the servants."
Ivy's eyes hardened.
"Staff."
The panel door opened.
Declan entered with two officers.
Alistair raised his hands.
"I assume I am under arrest."
Declan shook his head.
"Not by me."
Celia entered behind him with two federal agents.
Alistair's face changed.
"That is disappointing."
Ivy looked at Celia.
"How?"
"Creditor rights."
Celia smiled thinly.
"Your trust gave us standing to demand an independent review of Halcyon-linked assets."
One agent stepped toward the crate.
"We have a preservation warrant."
Alistair laughed softly.
"Augustus will burn you all before morning."
Ivy looked at him.
"Then start talking."
They opened the locked crate.
Inside were payment records, clinic rosters, security logs, and sealed settlement agreements.
At the bottom sat a small digital recorder labeled E.B. / C.L.
Ivy's hands shook when she saw it.
The agent photographed it in place before removing it.
"What is that?" Declan asked.
Agnes answered.
"The ballroom ears."
The old room had once been wired to record conversations in the ballroom through hidden microphones.
Eleanor and Celeste had used the system to capture meetings Gideon believed were private.
Most of the tapes had been destroyed.
One digital archive remained.
The agent connected the recorder to an isolated laptop.
Hundreds of audio files appeared.
One was dated October sixteenth, nine years ago.
The day before Celeste died.
Ivy pressed play.
Gideon Blackwood's voice filled the hidden room.
"You lost control of your accountant."
Augustus Hale answered.
"Celeste is not mine to control."
"Then remove her."
"Eleanor will know."
"Eleanor already knows too much."
A third voice spoke.
Alistair.
"There are other options."
Gideon laughed.
"You always were the soft brother."
Alistair's recorded voice hardened.
"Exile is not softness."
Gideon replied.
"Dead women don't testify."
Ivy closed her eyes.
The room seemed to tilt.
Then Augustus said something none of them expected.
"Do what you want with Celeste."
A pause.
"Eleanor is mine."
Ronan heard the recording from his bed at Blackwood House two hours later.
Celia played it through an encrypted call.
He said nothing until the file ended.
Then he asked,
"Can the audio be authenticated?"
The federal agent answered.
"Preliminary metadata is consistent. Full analysis will take time."
"Time we don't have," Ivy said.
Vivienne still controlled the house.
Augustus still had board influence.
And Alistair's warning about offshore transfers had already proven true.
Celia traced three transactions moving at that moment.
"Forty-six million has left domestic accounts."
Ronan's voice became cold.
"Can we stop the rest?"
"With a court order."
"How fast?"
"Morning, if we're lucky."
Alistair sat handcuffed across the hidden room.
"You won't have until morning."
Ivy looked at him.
"Why?"
"Augustus has a contingency."
"What contingency?"
Alistair smiled without humor.
"If Halcyon evidence becomes unrecoverable, he doesn't need to defend it."
Ivy's stomach tightened.
"What does unrecoverable mean?"
Alistair looked at the wall separating them from the ballroom.
"Fire."
Agnes went pale.
"There are two hundred people sleeping in this house."
"He doesn't care."
Ivy's phone was already in her hand.
"Evacuate everyone."
Ronan spoke through the call.
"Vivienne will notice."
"Let her."
Alistair shook his head.
"Too early and Augustus changes the plan."
Ivy stared at him.
"Then what do you suggest?"
Alistair smiled faintly.
"Give him what he wants."
"The evidence?"
"No."
May you like
His eyes moved toward Ronan's voice on the phone.
"A wedding."
