Chapter 24 - THE DRESS SHE WAS WEARING

At eight o'clock the next evening, the Blackwood ballroom was empty except for six people.

Ivy Lancaster.

Ronan Blackwood.

Declan Shaw.

Celia Voss.

Vivienne Hale.

And Augustus Hale.

Federal agents waited outside the property line with warrants that Celia believed would become executable the moment Augustus admitted control over several offshore accounts.

Blackwood security waited beyond the ballroom doors.

No guests.

No orchestra.

No politicians pretending not to see.

Just the people who had carried the story from beginning to end.

Vivienne stood beneath the central chandelier wearing white.

Again.

The dress was simpler this time.

She had no diamonds except small earrings.

Her accounts were frozen.

Her jewelry vault had been seized under preservation order.

The engagement ring was gone.

So was the Blackwood signet ring.

She had been forced to return it when the incapacity action was withdrawn.

Augustus stood beside the fireplace.

He looked older.

Not weaker.

Men like Augustus did not become harmless when cornered.

They became concentrated.

Ivy entered wearing navy.

Not a uniform.

A tailored dress the same color as the maid uniform that had once bled beneath Vivienne's crop.

Vivienne noticed.

"Dramatic."

Ivy looked at her white dress.

"You would know."

Ronan stood near the ballroom doors.

He had wanted Ivy behind him.

She refused.

They stood side by side instead.

Augustus looked at them.

"This is touching."

Ronan's voice was cold.

"You asked for a meeting."

"Vivienne did."

"Then why are you here?"

Augustus smiled.

"Parents clean up their children's mistakes."

Vivienne's face tightened.

Ivy saw it.

Augustus had been punishing his daughter since the board hearing.

Not physically.

Worse for Vivienne.

He had made her feel useless.

That fracture could be used.

"Your father blames you," Ivy said.

Vivienne looked at her.

"Do not speak to me."

"He thinks you lost Ronan."

"I said don't speak to me."

"He thinks the riding crop ruined everything."

Vivienne's face flushed.

Augustus stepped forward.

"Enough."

Ivy looked at him.

"Am I wrong?"

"You are irrelevant."

Ivy smiled faintly.

"You spent eleven months building a financial frame around me."

Her voice remained calm.

"That's a lot of work for someone irrelevant."

Augustus's eyes hardened.

Celia quietly placed a folder on a side table.

The hidden ballroom microphones were recording again.

This time everyone knew except perhaps Vivienne.

Augustus almost certainly assumed it.

That was fine.

The goal was not trickery anymore.

It was pressure.

Ronan spoke.

"What do you want?"

Augustus looked at him.

"A managed settlement."

"Meaning?"

"The Hale family transfers remaining Blackwood-linked debt at a discount."

"In exchange?"

"You publicly characterize Halcyon as Gideon's operation."

Ronan laughed once.

"It was partly Gideon's operation."

"Exclusively."

"No."

"You limit cooperation against Vivienne."

Ronan's expression went still.

"No."

Augustus's jaw tightened.

"And Ivy drops civil claims."

Ivy answered.

"No."

Vivienne turned toward her father.

"You said this was about getting us out."

Augustus ignored her.

"I can still damage Blackwood."

Ronan shrugged.

"Then do it."

"You can still go to prison over Ortiz."

"Yes."

"You can lose your company."

"Yes."

"You can lose her."

Augustus nodded toward Ivy.

Ronan looked at her.

Then back at Augustus.

"That is her decision."

The answer frustrated Augustus more than any threat could have.

Control required fear of loss.

Ronan had finally accepted loss as possible.

Augustus turned toward Ivy.

"Your mother begged at the end."

The room changed.

Dorian had told Ivy not to come because something like this might happen.

Augustus wanted pain.

He wanted the old hierarchy restored for one second.

Ivy's hands shook.

She held them still.

"Were you there?"

Augustus realized the mistake half a second too late.

Vivienne looked at him.

Ronan did too.

Celia stopped breathing.

Ivy stepped forward.

"Were you there when my mother died?"

Augustus said nothing.

"You said she begged."

Ivy's voice became sharper.

"How would you know?"

Augustus's expression closed.

"I was speaking figuratively."

"No."

Ivy took another step.

"You weren't."

Vivienne stared at her father.

"Father?"

Augustus snapped,

"Be quiet."

That was the wrong choice.

Vivienne's face changed.

Ivy saw years of obedience crack.

"You told me Silas handled Celeste."

Augustus turned sharply.

"Vivienne."

Ronan went still.

Celia's eyes widened.

Vivienne continued, anger rising.

"You said you only handled Eleanor."

Augustus's face went white.

"Stop talking."

"You said Gideon changed the road order after Silas left."

"Vivienne."

"You said you went there because Gideon was too cowardly to watch his own mess."

Silence.

Ivy could hear her heartbeat.

Augustus stared at his daughter with pure hatred.

Vivienne finally understood she had just given them what they needed.

"Father?"

He moved toward her.

Ronan stepped between them.

"Don't."

Augustus stopped.

Ivy looked at Vivienne.

"You knew."

Vivienne's face crumpled.

"Not then."

"When?"

"Years later."

"And you said nothing."

"What was I supposed to do?"

The old Vivienne appeared again.

"Destroy my own family for a woman I never met?"

Ivy's voice became quiet.

"Yes."

Vivienne stared.

"That's what decent people do when their family murders someone."

"You think you're decent?"

Vivienne's voice rose.

"You stole Ronan."

Ivy almost laughed.

"There it is."

"You came into my house and—"

"Your house?"

Ivy looked around.

"You still think that was the crime."

Vivienne's eyes filled with tears.

"You stood there like a saint while everyone looked at me."

"I stood there because Mia was behind me."

"You wanted him to see you."

"I didn't know he was coming home."

"Liar."

Vivienne stepped closer.

"You loved it when he caught the crop."

Ivy's shoulder seemed to burn with remembered pain.

"No."

She looked directly into Vivienne's eyes.

"I loved that it stopped."

The distinction broke something.

Vivienne reached toward the side table.

A riding crop lay there.

Ivy had not seen it before.

Ronan moved instantly.

His hand closed around the leather before Vivienne could lift it.

The entire story returned to its first moment.

Same ballroom.

Same woman in white.

Same crop.

Same man holding it in midair.

But this time Ivy was not bleeding.

This time twenty-three staff members stood visible behind the open ballroom doors.

Mia stood with them.

Agnes stood in front.

Dorian and Theo stood at the back.

Vivienne stared.

"Why are they here?"

Ivy answered.

"Witnesses."

Ronan took the crop from Vivienne's hand.

His voice was quiet.

"Touch her again..."

Vivienne's face went white.

He repeated the words from the night everything began.

"...and you will leave this house with nothing but the dress you are wearing."

Vivienne laughed hysterically.

"You already took everything."

Ronan looked at her.

"No."

He nodded toward the open doors.

Federal agents entered.

"Consequences did."

Two agents approached Augustus.

Celia spoke quietly.

"The warrant was activated when Vivienne corroborated your presence and operational knowledge."

Augustus looked at his daughter.

She backed away from him.

"Don't look at me like that."

He said nothing.

Vivienne's voice broke.

"You made me do everything."

Augustus finally spoke.

"No."

His voice was cruelly calm.

"I taught you what power looked like."

He looked at the riding crop in Ronan's hand.

"You chose what to do with it."

For once, Augustus was right.

Agents secured his wrists.

Another agent approached Vivienne regarding obstruction, attempted poisoning, evidence tampering, and conspiracy allegations.

Vivienne looked at Ronan.

"You're letting them arrest me?"

The question carried the last remains of the woman who believed he would always protect her from reality.

Ronan answered quietly.

"I should have let consequences reach you years ago."

Vivienne looked at Ivy.

"You won."

Ivy shook her head.

"No."

She looked at Mia.

Then Agnes.

Then her brothers.

"We survived long enough for the truth to stop losing."

Vivienne was escorted toward the doors.

She still wore the white dress.

No diamonds.

No ring.

No access card.

No father powerful enough to stop the agents beside her.

At the threshold, she turned once.

The ballroom was no longer silent for her.

Staff whispered.

Phones rang.

People moved.

Life continued without asking permission.

The doors closed behind her.

Ivy looked at the riding crop in Ronan's hand.

"What are you going to do with that?"

He stared at it.

Then snapped it across his knee.

He placed the broken pieces on the table.

"Evidence first."

Celia raised an eyebrow.

Ronan sighed.

"Fine."

He handed the pieces to a federal agent.

May you like

Ivy laughed.

It was the first laugh in the ballroom that did not belong to someone cruel.
