Chapter 19 - THE PARTY THAT WAS A TRAP

Vivienne wanted the ballroom restored exactly as it had looked the night Ronan came home early.
Same chandeliers.
Same white flowers.
Same orchestra placement.
Same table configuration.
She even ordered the same champagne.
Only the riding crop was missing.
Ivy noticed that first.
She entered through the service corridor wearing a black evening dress instead of a uniform.
Celia had insisted.
"You are a creditor and witness, not staff tonight."
Ivy disliked the dress because it made her feel like she was impersonating someone wealthier.
Agnes fixed that with one sentence.
"Clothing has never created class."
She adjusted Ivy's sleeve.
"It only reveals who thinks it does."
The guest list was smaller than the engagement party.
Board members.
Hale attorneys.
Two judges Augustus trusted.
Several investors.
Federal agents were not officially present.
Unofficially, three catering staff wore recording devices connected to an evidence team two blocks away.
The hidden room behind the ballroom was active again.
Every microphone had been tested.
Every recording ran to independent storage.
No single blackout could erase the night.
Ronan stood at the front beside Vivienne.
She wore white again.
Not the same dress.
A new one.
More elaborate.
More expensive.
As if money could revise memory.
Augustus entered last.
His eyes swept the room.
They stopped on Ivy.
He smiled faintly.
"You were not invited."
Ivy held up a folder.
"Creditors are difficult to exclude from restructuring events."
"This is a wedding."
"Not until someone says yes."
Augustus's smile cooled.
Vivienne walked toward Ivy.
"I thought you would be too embarrassed to come."
Ivy looked around the ballroom.
"Why?"
"Because tonight ends the little fantasy you have been living."
"Which fantasy?"
"That Ronan chose you."
Ivy looked toward him.
Ronan's expression gave nothing away.
"You really think every woman wants the same prize you do," Ivy said.
Vivienne's eyes narrowed.
"He kissed you, didn't he?"
Ivy stopped breathing for half a second.
Vivienne smiled.
"I can always tell."
"Then you know he still came back here."
The sentence hurt Ivy to say.
That made it convincing.
Vivienne's smile widened.
"Exactly."
She moved closer.
"Men like Ronan visit women like you when they are angry with women like me."
Ivy's jaw tightened.
"And then?"
"Then they remember who belongs beside them in photographs."
Ivy looked at the white dress.
"You learned nothing."
"I learned enough to win."
The orchestra began.
Vivienne turned away.
The ceremony was intentionally short.
A private judge Augustus trusted stood beneath the chandelier.
Ronan and Vivienne faced each other.
The board gathered around.
Augustus held a debt standstill agreement.
Celia stood near the side table waiting for signatures.
The judge began.
"We are gathered—"
Ronan interrupted.
"Before we continue, the debt agreement."
Augustus frowned.
"After the vows."
"That wasn't the arrangement."
Vivienne looked at her father.
"Sign it."
Augustus stared at Ronan.
Then smiled.
"Always your mother's son."
He signed.
Celia took the document.
"And the incapacity withdrawal."
Vivienne signed that one.
Celia checked both pages.
Then nodded once at Ronan.
The legal trap closed.
Ronan now had restored authority.
Hale had signed a binding debt standstill.
The judge resumed.
"Ronan Blackwood, do you—"
"No."
Vivienne blinked.
The judge stopped.
Augustus's face changed.
Ronan stepped away from the altar.
"I do not."
Vivienne stared at him.
"What are you doing?"
Ronan removed the ceremonial ring from his pocket and placed it on the table.
"Keeping my part of the agreement."
Augustus stood.
"There is no agreement without the marriage."
Celia held up the signed standstill.
"Your document disagrees."
Augustus looked at his attorneys.
Their faces confirmed it.
Vivienne's voice shook.
"You lied to me."
Ronan looked at her.
"Yes."
The honesty hit harder than denial.
Augustus laughed once.
"Clever."
He looked around the ballroom.
"Very clever."
Then his eyes settled on the chandeliers.
"But not enough."
Ivy felt the warning.
"What did you do?"
Augustus looked at her.
"You still think this is a courtroom."
"No."
Ivy's voice remained calm.
"I think it's a room full of witnesses."
Augustus smiled.
"To what?"
Ronan stepped forward.
"To you admitting Gideon solved Celeste Lancaster as a problem."
Augustus's expression did not move.
"Edited audio."
"To you admitting Eleanor was different."
"More edited audio."
"To Halcyon records."
"Stolen documents."
"To Alistair's testimony."
That changed him.
Only slightly.
Ivy saw it.
"He talked," she said.
Augustus looked toward her.
"Alistair talks when frightened."
"He also saves paperwork."
"So do I."
Augustus reached into his jacket.
Every security officer moved.
He slowly removed a thick envelope.
"Since tonight appears to be about honesty, perhaps we should include Ronan's."
Ivy's heart tightened.
Ronan had expected this.
Augustus tossed the envelope onto a table.
Photographs spilled across the white cloth.
A younger Ronan outside a dock warehouse.
A union organizer being carried toward an ambulance.
Bank transfers from Blackwood shell accounts.
Security messages.
One message from Ronan read:
MAKE HIM AFRAID ENOUGH TO LEAVE.
The room erupted in whispers.
Vivienne stared at Ronan.
"You told her?"
Ronan looked at Ivy.
"Yes."
Augustus's smile disappeared.
That was not the reaction he wanted.
Ronan stepped into the center of the ballroom.
"Seven years ago, I ordered intimidation against a union organizer named Samuel Ortiz."
Every camera turned toward him.
"The men I sent assaulted him."
Whispers became shock.
Ronan continued.
"I did not order the assault."
He looked directly at the board.
"But I created the threat that made it possible."
No excuses.
"I concealed what happened."
Vivienne stared at him as though he had gone insane.
"Stop talking."
Ronan ignored her.
"This morning I gave a full statement to federal counsel and to Mr. Ortiz's attorney."
Augustus's face hardened.
"You think confession makes you noble?"
"No."
Ronan looked at him.
"It makes your leverage worthless."
The room went quiet.
Ivy understood the deeper trap.
Augustus had spent decades controlling people through secrets.
Ronan had removed the secret himself.
Celia stepped forward.
"And for the record, Mr. Ortiz has been informed of his right to pursue civil and criminal remedies."
Augustus's eyes burned.
"You would destroy your own name."
Ronan looked toward the Blackwood crest above the ballroom doors.
"It has survived worse things than honesty."
For the first time, some board members moved away from Augustus.
Vivienne saw it.
Panic entered her face.
"Father."
Augustus did not answer.
He looked toward Alistair's empty place at the table.
Then toward the western wall.
Ivy followed his gaze.
The hidden room.
Her stomach tightened.
"Declan."
The security chief was already moving.
The ballroom lights died.
Not flickered.
Died.
The chandeliers went black.
Emergency systems failed too.
Someone screamed.
The doors slammed shut.
Then a man's voice came through the darkness.
Not Augustus.
Alistair.
"Everybody stays exactly where they are."
Ivy's blood froze.
Alistair was supposed to be in federal custody.
Ronan shouted,
"Ivy!"
A hand closed over her mouth.
She drove her heel backward.
The grip tightened.
May you like
A cloth covered her face.
The ballroom disappeared.
