Chapter 16 - THE MAID WHO WOULD NOT BOW

Vivienne expected Ivy to scream.

She expected Ronan's staff to scatter.

She expected the old order to restore itself the moment the Blackwood signet ring touched her finger.

Instead, Ivy looked at the ring and laughed.

Not loudly.

Not kindly.

Vivienne's smile faltered.

"What is funny?"

Ivy knelt beside Ronan and checked his breathing.

"You."

"Excuse me?"

"You think the ring is the power."

Ivy looked up.

"That's why you never understood the house."

Vivienne's face hardened.

"Security."

Two board-appointed officers stepped forward.

Declan moved between them and Ivy.

"She's leaving under her own power."

Vivienne smiled.

"You no longer command security, Mr. Shaw."

Declan looked at the temporary governance order.

His jaw tightened.

Legally, she was right.

Ivy stood.

"Don't fight this here."

Declan looked at her.

"She's holding Ronan while he's drugged."

"Then we beat her awake."

Vivienne frowned.

Ivy corrected herself.

"Legally."

She looked down at Ronan.

His eyes were closed.

His breathing remained steady.

"Celia stays with him."

Vivienne laughed.

"You don't make conditions."

Ivy faced her.

"I control twenty-two percent of the emergency debt pool your father needs to stabilize this company."

The laughter stopped.

"If Ronan's medical care becomes questionable, I call the debt."

Celia's eyes widened.

So did the board members'.

Ivy had not known whether she could do that.

Celia recovered first.

"She can demand accelerated review," the attorney said carefully.

That was close enough.

Vivienne looked furious.

Ivy continued.

"Celia stays."

"Fine."

"Dr. Reed goes nowhere."

The doctor looked up sharply.

"Why?" Vivienne asked.

"Because he just admitted to drugging Ronan under duress."

Ivy turned toward the board.

"If he disappears, every one of you gets to explain why you accepted his medical certification after hearing that."

The eldest director went pale.

"Dr. Reed remains."

Vivienne's eyes burned.

"Anything else, maid?"

Ivy picked up her coat.

"Yes."

She looked at the signet ring.

"It looks cheap on you."

Then she walked out.

The front doors closed behind her at 7:03 p.m.

For eleven months, Ivy Lancaster had entered Blackwood House through the staff door.

The first time she left through the main entrance, she had no job, no formal authority inside, and no certainty that Ronan would still control his company when he woke.

She also had something she had never possessed before.

Leverage.

Celia's downtown office became the new command center.

Dorian sat at a conference table with his laptop.

Theo slept on a couch after refusing to go anywhere else.

Agnes arrived carrying three grocery bags.

Inside were not groceries.

There were copies of staff schedules, old maintenance maps, and a ring of master service keys.

Ivy stared at her.

"You stole those?"

Agnes looked offended.

"I have worked there forty-one years."

She placed the keys on the table.

"One does not steal one's own memory."

Dorian grinned.

"I like her."

"Everyone does," Ivy said.

Agnes sat.

"Not Vivienne."

"That improves your case."

At 8:20 p.m., the first staff message arrived.

The pastry chef reported Vivienne had ordered every portrait of Eleanor removed from the first floor.

At 8:47, the night driver reported Augustus had arrived through the east gate.

At 9:05, a maintenance worker sent a photograph of Alistair entering the old wine cellar.

At 9:18, a housekeeper reported two locked crates being moved from the underground archive toward the ballroom service corridor.

Ivy looked at the maintenance maps.

"Why the ballroom?"

Agnes leaned over.

"There used to be storage behind the west wall."

Dorian frowned.

"There isn't any room there now."

"Not on the current plans."

Agnes pulled out an older blueprint.

The ballroom wall was thicker than it should have been.

Behind it sat a narrow rectangular space with no marked door.

Ivy's heartbeat accelerated.

"What was that?"

Agnes's expression changed.

"Eleanor's document room."

"Why was it sealed?"

"Gideon renovated after she died."

Ivy looked at Dorian.

"Everything disappears behind walls in that house."

Dorian studied the plan.

"There's still a service shaft."

"Accessible from where?"

"Laundry corridor."

Agnes nodded.

"Staff side."

Ivy smiled faintly.

The house did belong to the people who knew how it breathed.

Her phone rang.

Dr. Reed.

She answered.

"How is Ronan?"

"Awake."

Ivy closed her eyes in relief.

"Can he speak?"

"Yes."

"Put him on."

A pause.

Then Ronan's voice came through weakly.

"You insulted her ring?"

Ivy laughed despite herself.

"You heard that?"

"Celia has an excellent memory."

"How do you feel?"

"Like I lost an argument with a truck."

"Good."

"Good?"

"It means you're alive enough to complain."

Silence.

Then his voice softened.

"Are you safe?"

"For now."

"Ivy."

"Don't."

"Don't what?"

"Use that voice."

"What voice?"

"The one that makes concern sound like an order."

He almost laughed.

"Where are you?"

"Celia's office."

"Stay there."

"There it is."

Ronan sighed.

"Vivienne has administrative control of the house."

"Temporary control."

"She can still hurt you."

"She already did."

Ivy looked at the old blueprint.

"Now I get a turn."

Ronan went quiet.

"What are you planning?"

"Nothing reckless."

Dorian looked at her across the table and mouthed, Liar.

Ivy ignored him.

"I found something in the old building plans."

"What?"

"A room behind the ballroom."

Ronan was silent for too long.

"You know it."

"No."

"You hesitated."

"Because my mother once told me the ballroom had ears."

Ivy felt a chill.

"What does that mean?"

"I thought it was a warning about servants."

Agnes rolled her eyes.

Ivy almost smiled.

Ronan continued.

"Maybe she meant the room."

"Vivienne is moving crates into the service corridor beside it."

Ronan's voice sharpened.

"Do not go back into the house."

Ivy said nothing.

"Ivy."

"You are currently lying in a bed under the authority of a woman who drugged you through your own doctor."

"Samuel was coerced."

"I know."

"Then don't make this about him."

"I'm making it about systems."

Ivy's voice hardened.

"Your system failed."

Ronan was silent.

"Mine hasn't yet."

"What is your system?"

Ivy looked at Agnes.

Then Dorian.

Then the stream of messages arriving from cooks, cleaners, drivers, and maintenance workers inside Blackwood House.

"People you forgot to count."

The call ended five minutes later with no agreement.

Ivy entered Blackwood House at 1:12 a.m. through a laundry delivery door.

She wore a plain gray uniform borrowed from a linen supplier.

Dorian remained outside with Celia.

Agnes went with Ivy because no one in the mansion questioned an eighty-year-old housekeeper carrying folded towels.

They moved through the basement corridor.

Vivienne had replaced several security officers with Hale contractors.

Those men watched formal entrances.

They did not watch laundry carts.

Agnes pushed one.

Ivy walked behind.

At the west service stair, a young kitchen porter opened a locked door without speaking.

At the ballroom corridor, the pastry chef coughed twice to signal the hall was clear.

They reached the sealed service shaft.

The entrance was hidden behind a linen cabinet.

Dorian talked Ivy through the old plans by phone.

"Three feet in, there should be a vertical pipe."

"I see it."

"Turn right."

"There is no right."

"Then you're upside down."

Ivy stared at the phone.

"How would I be upside down?"

"Blueprint joke."

"I hate you."

"Love you too."

Agnes suppressed a laugh.

They found the narrow passage.

It ended behind the ballroom wall.

A metal panel bore a tiny keyhole.

Ivy tried the master service keys.

None worked.

Then she remembered the brass key.

The same one that had opened Eleanor's safe and cemetery compartment.

She inserted it.

The lock clicked.

Agnes whispered,

"Celeste had the master."

Ivy opened the panel.

Darkness waited behind it.

She stepped into the room.

Shelves lined the walls.

Old recording equipment sat beneath dust sheets.

A long table occupied the center.

And on that table lay the two crates Vivienne's men had moved.

One was open.

Inside were hundreds of paper files.

The second was locked.

Ivy approached.

A voice spoke from the darkness behind her.

"I knew your mother would eventually lead someone back here."

Ivy turned.

Alistair Blackwood stood in the doorway with a pistol lowered at his side.

Agnes went pale.

May you like

Alistair smiled.

"I simply hoped it wouldn't be you."
