Chapter 16 - THE BROTHER WHO ACCUSED HER

Adeline heard two hundred people inhale at once.
The room seemed to move farther away.
Daniel stood beneath the chandelier pointing at her with a hand that shook so badly his finger barely stayed level.
"My sister is the reason I disappeared."
Camilla did not smile anymore.
She did not need to.
The sentence was stronger if she looked solemn.
"Daniel," Adeline whispered.
He stared at her.
His pupils were too large.
Sweat shone at his hairline despite the cold ballroom.
Something was wrong beyond fear.
"What did I do?"
His mouth opened.
No sound came out.
Bellamy stepped closer behind him.
Daniel flinched.
Adeline saw it.
So did Quinn.
"Give him space," Quinn called.
Bellamy looked toward her.
"He is a frightened witness."
"Then step away from him."
Camilla lifted a hand.
"Detective, please do not intimidate a traumatized man."
Quinn's expression turned murderous.
Ward moved toward Daniel.
One of Camilla's private security men blocked him.
"Federal agent."
Ward showed his badge.
The man hesitated.
Camilla spoke from the stage.
"Daniel is here voluntarily."
Ward looked at him.
"Then he can walk over to me voluntarily."
Daniel took one step.
Bellamy touched his elbow.
Daniel stopped.
That was enough.
Ward's team moved.
The ballroom erupted into shouting.
Private security backed away as federal agents closed in.
Camilla did not run.
She stood perfectly still and let everyone else create chaos around her.
Adeline reached Daniel first.
He recoiled from her.
The movement broke her heart.
"It's me."
"I know."
His voice was thick.
"Daniel, look at me."
He did.
Tears filled his eyes.
"I'm sorry."
She grabbed his hands.
"For what?"
"They said you would die."
The words came out barely audible.
"If I didn't say it."
Adeline pulled him against her.
He collapsed into her shoulder like the three missing years had been holding him upright until that second.
Ward shouted for a medic.
Bellamy moved toward a side door.
Luca intercepted him.
"Going somewhere?"
Bellamy smiled.
"I quit four nights ago."
"You forgot to return the keys."
Bellamy's hand moved inside his jacket.
Luca slammed him against the wall before anything came out.
A small remote control hit the floor.
Ward's face changed.
"Do not touch that."
The ballroom froze again.
A red light blinked on the remote.
Camilla looked at Bellamy for the first time with genuine alarm.
Adeline noticed.
"What is it?"
Bellamy laughed from against the wall.
"Insurance."
Ward ordered the hotel evacuated.
Guests rushed toward the exits.
The same people who had stood motionless while a maid was struck now moved with remarkable speed when danger threatened them personally.
Adeline would have appreciated the irony if Daniel were not barely conscious in her arms.
Paramedics lifted him onto a stretcher.
He grabbed her wrist.
"Coat."
She leaned closer.
"What?"
"His coat."
Daniel's eyes moved toward Enzo.
"The night."
"Pocket."
Then he lost consciousness.
Adeline looked at Enzo.
"Your coat."
"What about it?"
"I don't know."
Ward's bomb technicians determined the remote controlled nothing in the ballroom.
Bellamy refused to explain.
That frightened Ward more than if explosives had been found.
He ordered every connected Ashford property checked.
Camilla stood near the stage surrounded by attorneys.
She had still not been arrested.
Ward lacked direct proof tying her to Daniel's drugging or confinement that would survive the first hearing.
Daniel's own presence helped, but until toxicology confirmed what was in his system and he could give a coherent statement, Camilla remained protected by layers of plausible deniability.
Adeline wanted to scream.
Camilla had produced a kidnapped man in front of federal agents and was still discussing procedure with lawyers.
Power did not make people immune to law.
It simply purchased time inside it.
Enzo approached Camilla.
"You lose."
She looked at Daniel's stretcher disappearing through the doors.
"Do I?"
"Bellamy is in custody."
"Daniel is alive."
"Your studio is seized."
"Your witnesses are talking."
Camilla glanced at the clock.
Ten forty-six.
"And at midnight, your company becomes mine."
Enzo smiled without warmth.
"You still don't have Elena's assignment."
"I don't need her alive."
The sentence was quiet.
Adeline heard it.
So did Ward.
Camilla realized too late that a microphone on the stage was still live.
Her words echoed through the half-empty ballroom.
I don't need her alive.
Everyone stopped.
Camilla's face went white.
Ward turned slowly.
"Would you like to clarify that?"
Her attorney stepped in immediately.
"Ms. Ashford is done speaking."
"She was referring to probate law."
Ward's eyes stayed on Camilla.
"Of course she was."
It was the first unplanned crack in her control.
Adeline felt hope rise.
Then every television in the ballroom changed channels at once.
A prerecorded news bulletin appeared.
The anchor announced that documents had been leaked showing Enzo Marchetti's father paid millions in bribes to city officials.
Names began scrolling across the screen.
Judges.
Hospital executives.
Union leaders.
Several people still inside the ballroom stared at their own names.
The North Ledger had been released.
Not by federal investigators.
Online.
Publicly.
Camilla looked genuinely surprised.
Enzo saw it.
"That wasn't you."
She recovered.
"Does it matter?"
His phone began vibrating nonstop.
So did Luca's.
So did half the room.
Stock markets were closed, but lenders were already calling.
Board members demanded an emergency vote.
Prosecutors requested records.
The Marchetti empire began collapsing in real time.
Enzo stood beneath the screens watching his father's secrets become headlines.
Camilla stepped closer.
"You could have prevented this."
"By marrying you?"
"By understanding what your name costs."
He looked at her.
"No."
"By understanding what silence costs."
For the first time, she seemed uncertain.
Enzo turned away.
He followed Adeline and Daniel out of the ballroom.
Camilla called after him.
"Midnight, Enzo."
He did not turn around.
"You have seventy minutes left."
Ward allowed Camilla to leave the ballroom only because agents followed her directly to a private suite and because her attorneys threatened an emergency injunction if she was detained without a warrant.
Adeline watched from the corridor as Camilla passed.
Their eyes met.
Camilla slowed.
"You should go with your brother."
Adeline stared at her.
"That almost sounded human."
Camilla smiled faintly.
"Do not confuse strategy with cruelty every time."
"You drugged him."
"Prove I did."
"You kept him hidden."
"Prove I knew."
"You just brought him into a ballroom like a prop."
Camilla's smile sharpened.
"He walked in."
The technical correctness was monstrous.
Adeline understood why Ward kept warning them about proof.
Camilla lived in the narrow space between what everyone knew and what prosecutors could establish.
"One day," Adeline said, "you are going to say prove it to the wrong person."
Camilla looked toward Enzo.
"I already did."
Her lawyers guided her away.
Enzo joined Adeline.
"Do not talk to her alone."
"I was surrounded by federal agents."
"That is not what I meant."
Adeline looked at him.
He seemed genuinely disturbed.
"You think she gets inside my head."
"I think she studies injuries and then presses them until people move."
"She did it to me for years."
The admission was quiet.
Adeline's anger softened despite herself.
"What injury did she use on you?"
Enzo looked across the ballroom at the footage of his father's ledger scrolling on television.
"Fear of becoming the man everyone already thought I was."
"The Caruso video made that easy."
"If it came out, every rumor about my family would become proof in people's minds."
"So I kept paying the price to prevent the accusation."
Adeline nodded slowly.
"And every payment made her accusation more valuable."
"Yes."
"That sounds familiar."
"Your brother?"
"My silence."
She looked toward the doors where Daniel's stretcher had disappeared.
"Every year I did not find him made me more desperate to believe the next clue."
"Camilla did not create the wound."
"She learned how to use it."
Enzo's gaze settled on her.
"Then maybe surviving her means learning where not to move when she presses."
"Maybe."
Quinn appeared beside them.
"Beautiful therapy session."
"Ambulance is leaving."
"Adeline goes now."
Enzo started to follow.
Quinn stopped him.
"Ward needs you for the loan documents."
Adeline saw the conflict in his face.
Company or Daniel.
Exactly the kind of choice Camilla liked to create.
"Stay," Adeline said.
Enzo looked at her.
"Are you sure?"
"Daniel has me."
"The company has two hundred employees who did not choose your father."
"Do what you need to do here."
The words surprised both of them.
Trust did not arrive as a grand declaration.
It arrived as permission to leave someone in the right place.
Enzo nodded once.
"Call me."
"I will."
At the hospital entrance, reporters swarmed the ambulance.
Ward's agents created a corridor.
Adeline climbed inside beside Daniel before cameras could see his face clearly.
His hand found hers even though his eyes remained closed.
"Addie."
"I'm here."
"Did I hurt you?"
She knew what he meant.
The accusation.
The pointing finger.
"No."
"You scared me."
"But you did not hurt me."
His eyes opened a fraction.
"Liar."
She laughed through tears.
"Runs in the family."
He squeezed her hand weakly.
For the first time, the lie between them was kind.
At the hospital, Daniel's toxicology screen showed a powerful sedative combined with a stimulant that kept him awake but disoriented.
Doctors began treatment.
Adeline sat beside his bed holding his hand.
Enzo waited outside with Luca.
At eleven twelve, Daniel opened his eyes.
"Addie."
She leaned close.
"I'm here."
"I said terrible things."
"You survived."
"That is all I care about tonight."
He started crying.
"I tried to get back."
"I know."
"No."
His grip tightened.
"You don't."
"Matteo helped me."
"Then Camilla found the clinic."
"Gabriel tried to move me."
"Bellamy shot him."
Adeline frowned.
"Gabriel was shot?"
"Three years ago."
"He hid it."
Daniel's breathing became uneven.
"Camilla had my notebooks."
"She knew about Elena."
"She knew about the loan."
Adeline leaned closer.
"Where is Elena?"
Daniel closed his eyes.
"I don't know now."
"But she came back for me."
"She gave me something before Bellamy caught us."
"What?"
Daniel looked toward the doorway.
Enzo stood there.
"His coat."
Enzo frowned.
"My coat?"
Daniel nodded weakly.
"The night Camilla hit Addie."
"Bellamy knew Enzo always put his coat in the west cloakroom before the ballroom."
"Elena got into the hotel service corridor."
"She put something inside the lining."
Adeline stared.
"The same coat he put over me."
Daniel nodded.
"She told me if anything went wrong, the coat would carry the truth out because Enzo never lets anyone else wear it."
Adeline almost laughed at the terrible irony.
The one night Enzo had given the coat away was the night it mattered most.
"Where is it now?" Daniel asked.
Adeline's face changed.
The coat had remained at the estate after federal agents searched it for the missing ring.
Then the estate evidence team had sealed parts of the house.
Luca called security.
No answer.
He called again.
A guard finally picked up.
His voice was panicked.
"Sir, we have a breach."
Enzo went still.
"Where?"
"Private study."
"What was taken?"
The guard hesitated.
May you like
"Your black coat."
