Chapter 10 - THE HOSPITAL WING WITH NO NAME

Adeline watched the twenty-second video fourteen times.

On the fifteenth, Enzo closed the laptop.

"Enough."

She looked up sharply.

"Do not tell me enough."

"You are not learning anything new by hurting yourself with the same twenty seconds."

"He is alive."

"Three months ago, yes."

"That is alive."

"It is also three months."

She stood.

"You always do that."

"Do what?"

"Take hope and put legal language around it until no one can touch it."

His voice stayed calm.

"Because hope is exactly what someone has used to move you twice already."

"And fear is what Camilla used to keep you engaged for four years."

The words struck both of them.

Adeline regretted them immediately.

Enzo did not show anger.

He simply looked tired.

"Yes."

Again, he refused to defend himself.

That was becoming harder to fight than arrogance.

Quinn entered with Agent Ward.

Ward carried a stack of documents.

"We traced the surveillance server."

Enzo looked at him.

"To Bellamy?"

"The equipment was purchased through Harbor Clinical Logistics."

Adeline stared.

The same dissolved company owned by Dr. Evelyn Shaw.

Ward continued.

"Harbor leased medical transport vehicles, surveillance equipment, and private rooms at several facilities."

"One of those facilities is Lakeshore Behavioral Center."

Adeline's throat tightened.

"Psychiatric hospital?"

"Private treatment facility."

"Owned by whom?"

Ward looked at her.

"Ashford Health Group."

Camilla's family.

Of course.

"Is Daniel there?"

"We do not know."

"Then go find out."

"We are obtaining records."

"Records can be changed."

Ward's expression suggested he knew that better than she did.

"A warrant team is already moving."

Adeline grabbed her coat.

Enzo blocked the doorway.

"No."

She stared at him.

"We did this argument already."

"And I learned from it."

"Good."

"Move."

"No."

Quinn rubbed her forehead.

"I am going to arrest both of you for making my headache worse."

Ward looked between them.

"Ms. Croft cannot be part of the search team."

Adeline turned on him.

"I am not asking for a badge."

"You are a potential witness and a potential target."

"I am also his sister."

Ward's face softened slightly.

"Which is why you wait until the building is secured."

That was different from being excluded entirely.

Adeline hated that it was reasonable.

"How long?"

"As soon as I know something, I tell you."

"Promise?"

Ward met her eyes.

"Yes."

He kept it.

Ninety minutes later, he called.

They found records for a patient admitted under the name David Crane.

The photograph in the file was Daniel.

Adeline nearly dropped the phone.

"Is he there now?"

"No."

The single word emptied her lungs.

"When did he leave?"

"Six weeks ago."

"Where?"

"Transfer destination is blank."

"Who authorized it?"

Ward hesitated.

"Camilla Ashford."

Enzo, standing beside her, closed his eyes.

Adeline gripped the phone.

"Why would she have authority?"

"She sits on the health group's patient advocacy board."

"That gives her authority to move people under fake names?"

"It should not."

"But someone accepted her signature."

"Yes."

"Can I see the room?"

Ward paused.

"Come with Quinn."

Lakeshore Behavioral Center looked nothing like a prison.

That made it worse.

The lobby contained soft chairs, abstract paintings, and a fountain that sounded expensive.

Patients walked in a landscaped courtyard beyond glass doors.

Adeline imagined Daniel trapped somewhere beneath all that calm branding.

Ward met them near an elevator.

"The regular staff knew him as David."

"They say he was quiet, compliant, and had memory problems after a head injury."

Adeline's eyes filled.

"What head injury?"

"Records say a car accident."

"He was admitted with a gunshot wound."

"We know."

They took the elevator to the fourth floor.

Room 417 was empty.

A bed.

A desk.

A window that opened only three inches.

Adeline touched the windowsill.

A series of tiny marks had been scratched into the paint.

Groups of seven.

Weeks.

Dozens of them.

"He counted time," she whispered.

Quinn looked away.

On the underside of the desk, Daniel had carved two letters.

A + D.

Adeline pressed her fingers over them.

Enzo stood at the door.

For once, he had no useful sentence.

Ward entered holding a medical chart.

"You need to see this."

Medication logs showed Daniel had been given heavy sedatives for almost three years.

No family visits.

No court-appointed guardian.

No verified identity.

Every six months, an external physician renewed his confinement order.

The physician's name was Dr. Samuel Kerr.

Adeline looked at Ward.

"Where is he?"

"Retired."

"Address?"

"We're locating him."

Enzo took the chart.

"Who paid the bills?"

Ward flipped to the financial section.

"Harbor Clinical Logistics for the first eighteen months."

"Then the Ashford Foundation."

There it was.

Not a planted ring.

Not a synthetic photograph.

Not a transfer routed through a foreign login.

Three years of medical bills.

Three years of Daniel hidden under a false name.

Adeline felt the truth become too large for outrage.

"Camilla knew."

No one contradicted her.

A nurse appeared at the door.

She was in her late fifties, with a worried face and a badge reading M. Flores.

"Excuse me."

Ward turned.

"Can I help you?"

She looked at Adeline.

"Are you David's sister?"

Adeline's heart jumped.

"Daniel."

"His name is Daniel."

The nurse pressed one hand to her chest.

"He told me once."

"Only once."

"Then he denied it for months."

Adeline stepped closer.

"Did you know where they transferred him?"

The nurse looked toward the hallway.

Fear moved across her face.

"I shouldn't be talking."

Ward showed his identification.

"You should."

She lowered her voice.

"Six weeks ago, two private transport officers came after midnight."

"They had paperwork."

"One of them said he was going to an Ashford hospice facility."

Adeline's blood went cold.

"Hospice?"

"Daniel was not dying."

"I know."

"That's why I questioned it."

"What happened?"

"The woman with them told me I had misunderstood his condition."

"What woman?"

The nurse looked at Enzo.

Then Adeline.

"Camilla Ashford."

Adeline closed her eyes.

Camilla had personally come to move him.

"Did Daniel see her?"

"Yes."

"How did he react?"

The nurse swallowed.

"He started screaming."

Adeline's knees weakened.

Enzo moved closer but did not touch her.

"What did he say?"

"He kept saying one sentence."

"What sentence?"

The nurse's eyes filled.

"Don't let her take me back to the bride."

Silence filled the room.

Enzo frowned.

"The bride?"

Nurse Flores nodded.

"That's what he called someone."

"For years."

"Whenever he had nightmares, he said the bride was waiting downstairs."

Adeline stared at Enzo.

Camilla had been planning a wedding.

A bride.

Waiting downstairs.

"Was there a downstairs unit here?"

Ward asked.

The nurse shook her head.

"Not officially."

Everyone went still.

"What does that mean?"

Nurse Flores looked toward the floor.

"There is an old hydrotherapy wing beneath the building."

"It was supposed to be sealed before Ashford Health bought the property."

"But some nights, the freight elevator still went down."

Ward was already calling his team.

The freight elevator required a maintenance key.

One was found in the administrator's safe.

The doors opened onto a dark corridor one level below the basement.

No windows.

No cameras visible.

The walls were painted institutional green.

At the far end stood a steel door.

Someone had written a single word across it in black marker.

BRIDE.

Adeline's breathing changed.

Ward forced the lock with the facility manager's authorization.

Inside was not a treatment room.

It was a video studio.

A chair stood beneath bright lights.

Three cameras faced it.

A teleprompter sat beside the center lens.

On a shelf were wigs, jackets, hospital gowns, and makeup supplies.

Quinn stared.

"They filmed patients."

Enzo walked to the computer station.

Its drives had been removed.

Adeline noticed the wall behind the chair.

It was the same white wall from the video of Daniel.

This was where someone had recorded him three months earlier.

A paper remained beneath the teleprompter.

Adeline picked it up with gloved hands.

It contained lines Daniel had apparently been instructed to say.

I stole money from the Ashford Foundation.

I lied about the North Ledger.

I fled because Enzo Marchetti paid me.

Adeline's vision blurred.

Camilla had not merely hidden Daniel.

She had been building a confession.

Enzo read the final line.

My sister Adeline knew everything.

He looked at her.

She looked back.

The entire case against her suddenly had a future shape.

Ring.

Money.

Infiltration.

And eventually her own brother on video saying she was part of it.

The hidden studio contained more than the forced confession script.

Behind the camera wall, technicians found floor marks where different sets had been assembled.

A courtroom backdrop.

An office.

A living room.

A hospital room identical to the St. Vincent's basement treatment room.

Camilla's network did not merely record Daniel.

It manufactured environments around him.

Ward found a box of newspapers with altered front pages.

Some claimed Enzo had been arrested.

Others claimed Adeline had died in a traffic accident.

One announced Senator Ashford's death.

All were fake.

Adeline stared at them.

"Why show him this?"

A facility psychologist named Dr. Helen Marsh answered from the doorway.

She had just agreed to cooperate after seeing the federal warrant.

"To control his sense of time and consequence."

Adeline turned.

"You knew?"

Dr. Marsh went pale.

"Not the full extent."

"That phrase is becoming very popular."

The psychologist flinched.

She explained that Daniel had been described to staff as delusional, paranoid, and prone to constructing conspiracy narratives around his family.

When he insisted he had a sister named Adeline, administrators said she was part of the delusion.

When he begged staff to call police, his requests were documented as persecutory fixation.

When he correctly named Camilla Ashford, clinicians were told he had become obsessed with a public figure.

Adeline felt rage burn behind her eyes.

"They used the truth as proof he was sick."

Dr. Marsh looked ashamed.

"Yes."

"Did you ever check?"

"Once."

"I searched his name online."

"I found articles calling Daniel Croft a disgraced accountant who disappeared after making false claims."

Adeline laughed bitterly.

Camilla's media story had become part of Daniel's medical cage.

A headline written outside the hospital helped doctors interpret the man inside it.

"So the press release became diagnosis," Quinn said.

Dr. Marsh nodded.

"I am sorry."

Adeline looked at her.

"Sorry is not the same as useless."

"Tell Ward everything."

The psychologist did.

She described monthly visits by Bellamy.

Quarterly visits by Dr. Shaw.

And three visits by Camilla herself.

During Camilla's first visit, Daniel became so agitated that staff increased his medication.

During the second, Camilla insisted on speaking to him alone.

Afterward, he refused food for two days.

During the third, three months earlier, the hidden studio recording was made.

"Did he consent?" Ward asked.

"The chart says yes."

"Did you witness consent?"

"No."

"Who entered it?"

Dr. Marsh looked at the chart.

"Dr. Shaw."

Another contaminated document.

Another paper wall built around Daniel.

Adeline touched the teleprompter.

A smudge remained on the glass near the bottom.

The technician lifted a partial fingerprint.

It matched Camilla from public licensing records.

Small.

Direct.

Finally, something that did not route through Matteo's money or a frightened witness.

Camilla had touched the device used to force Daniel's confession.

Ward sealed the glass panel.

"This is the first physical link putting her in the studio."

Adeline looked at the empty chair.

"Then make it count."

Ward met her eyes.

"We will."

She believed he meant it.

For the first time, evidence felt like it might move in the same direction as truth rather than merely around it.

Ward found a storage cabinet.

Inside were labeled folders for different recording sessions.

Most were empty.

One remained.

D. CROFT - FINAL.

Adeline opened it.

Inside was a release schedule.

The date printed at the top was tomorrow.

Camilla planned to publish Daniel's forced confession in less than twenty-four hours.
