Chapter 9 - THE CAMERA THAT SHOULD NOT EXIST

Adeline did not return to her apartment.
She refused Enzo's guest suite because it felt too much like accepting his protection.
She ended up in the small sitting room beside the estate library because it had one door, two windows, and no history she knew about.
Luca placed a guard outside anyway.
Adeline waited until he left before moving a chair beneath the doorknob.
It was childish.
It made her feel better.
She sat on the sofa with the photograph of herself sleeping sealed in an evidence copy bag.
The angle bothered her.
Her bed faced the closet.
The photograph had been taken from above and slightly to the left.
There was no shelf there.
No vent.
No place for a person to stand.
Unless the image had not been taken by a person.
She called Luca.
He answered on the first ring.
"What?"
"I need you to take me back to my apartment."
"No."
"I know where the camera was."
There was a pause.
"I'll be outside in two minutes."
Enzo was waiting beside the car when they reached the garage.
Adeline stared at Luca.
"You told him."
"He signs my checks."
"Coward."
"Alive coward."
Enzo opened the rear door.
"Argue in the car."
Her apartment remained sealed by police tape, but Quinn met them there and allowed a controlled entry.
Adeline walked directly into the bedroom.
She stood beside the bed and looked toward the left corner.
A smoke detector sat near the ceiling.
"That."
Quinn called a crime-scene technician.
He removed the plastic cover.
Inside was a camera no larger than a shirt button.
Luca swore quietly.
"Wireless?"
The technician examined it.
"Local storage and cellular transmission."
"Professional."
Adeline stared at the device.
Someone had watched her sleep.
Someone had watched her prepare for work.
Maybe someone had watched her cry after another day without news about Daniel.
The violation felt deeper than the crop.
Enzo stood near the doorway.
He did not tell her she was safe.
She was grateful.
No one in the room could honestly promise that.
Quinn looked at the smoke detector mount.
"No tool marks."
"Whoever installed this had time."
Adeline thought back.
"My landlord replaced all the smoke detectors two weeks ago."
Quinn turned.
"Name?"
"Martin Kessler."
"Where is he?"
"He lives downstairs."
Kessler's apartment was empty.
His clothes were gone.
His passport was gone.
His refrigerator contained only mustard and three bottles of water.
The mailbox had not been checked in two days.
Quinn searched his desk.
A receipt from a hardware supplier showed twelve identical smoke detectors purchased three weeks earlier.
Adeline felt sick.
"Twelve."
Enzo looked at her.
"You think other apartments were watched?"
"Or other people."
Quinn found a handwritten list beneath the desk blotter.
Eleven addresses.
Adeline's was number seven.
One address belonged to Judge Pike.
Another belonged to Dr. Evelyn Shaw.
A third belonged to Arthur Bellamy.
A fourth was Senator Ashford's private residence.
Everyone looked at each other.
"Why spy on Camilla's own family?" Adeline asked.
Enzo answered.
"Insurance."
"Against what?"
"Everyone."
The final address on the list belonged to a lake house outside Evanston.
Luca recognized it.
"Gabriel owns that place."
Adeline stared.
Every person connected to the secret had been watched.
That meant Camilla either did not trust her own allies or someone else had been watching the entire network.
Quinn sent teams to the listed addresses.
At Pike's house, a camera was found inside a bedroom lamp.
At Shaw's condominium, one was found in an air vent.
At Bellamy's empty house, three were found.
The list of monitored addresses created an argument inside the investigation.
Ward believed Bellamy had built the surveillance network for Camilla.
Quinn believed at least one camera predated Bellamy's involvement.
Luca believed the network had been repurposed from an old Marchetti counter-surveillance system.
Enzo hated that possibility because it meant the infrastructure could have begun with his father.
Technicians dated the oldest receiver to nearly four years earlier.
That was before Camilla had formal access to the estate systems but after Matteo had begun discussing marriage with Enzo.
"Your father may have been watching her first," Quinn said.
Enzo looked at the rack.
"Then Bellamy inherited the system."
"Or Camilla discovered it and turned it around."
Adeline leaned against the cellar wall.
"So everyone was spying on everyone."
"Welcome to rich people," Quinn said.
Enzo glanced at her.
"Police never surveil anyone?"
"We have paperwork."
"That is what makes it romantic."
Even Ward almost smiled.
The humor disappeared when a technician recovered a folder marked A.C. - ENTRY.
It contained footage from the morning Adeline applied for the job.
She stood outside the employee entrance filling out a final form on a clipboard.
The camera angle came from a decorative stone planter.
Camilla appeared in the background, speaking to Bellamy.
No audio survived.
But Bellamy handed Camilla a printed page.
Camilla looked toward Adeline.
Then she smiled.
Adeline watched herself on the video, unaware that her identity had already been discovered.
"She knew before I was hired."
Luca nodded.
"Looks that way."
"Then Bellamy hired me because she wanted him to."
Enzo's face hardened.
"Bellamy had final authority for junior household hires."
Adeline looked at him.
"Your house gave Camilla the perfect place to put me."
He accepted the statement.
The folder contained another clip from three days later.
Camilla entered Bellamy's office after midnight.
She placed a photograph of Daniel on his desk.
On the back, visible when Bellamy turned it over, someone had written 214.
The photograph looked like the one later sent to Enzo outside the Trust building.
But the date was wrong.
It had been prepared before the gala.
"She staged the Daniel sighting," Adeline said.
"At least the image asset," Quinn replied.
Ward paused the frame.
"Who is the man in the picture?"
The face resembled Daniel.
Not perfectly.
Now that they knew to doubt it, small differences emerged.
The nose.
The left ear.
The slope of the shoulders.
Adeline felt anger replace hope.
"She found someone who looked enough like him to make me run."
"Or used prosthetics," Luca said.
The surveillance archive was not only evidence of watching.
It was evidence of rehearsal.
Camilla had studied reactions before engineering them.
Another file contained clips of Enzo at public events.
How often he reached into which pocket.
Which hand he used to carry his phone.
Where he placed his coat when seated.
Adeline stared.
"She studied you too."
Enzo looked at the screen without expression.
"Four years engaged to someone apparently counted as field research."
One clip showed him removing his coat at a charity dinner and hanging it behind his chair.
Bellamy entered the frame seconds later and touched the inside pocket.
The ring theft at the gala suddenly looked less improvised.
They had practiced access to the coat before Adeline ever wore it.
At Senator Ashford's residence, police were denied entry pending a warrant.
Camilla's lawyer called the request harassment.
By sunset, the leak reached the press.
Camilla stood before cameras again.
This time she looked furious.
"Someone has been spying on my family."
"I demand that law enforcement investigate Enzo Marchetti's security operation immediately."
Adeline watched from the library.
"She is blaming you."
Enzo nodded.
"Of course."
"Did you install any of them?"
He looked at her.
"No."
"I had to ask."
"You should."
The answer mattered more than she wanted it to.
He had stopped expecting trust from her.
Oddly, that made trust easier.
Luca entered carrying a hard drive.
"Camera in Adeline's apartment had three days of local storage left."
Adeline stiffened.
"Can we see it?"
"We copied the drive before Quinn took the original."
He connected it to the television.
The first clips showed Adeline asleep.
She looked away.
Enzo reached for the remote.
"Skip it."
"No."
She hated the footage.
She needed to see it.
Luca fast-forwarded.
The timestamp moved through hours.
Adeline left for work.
The empty room remained still.
At 10:13 a.m., the bedroom door opened.
A man entered.
His face was hidden beneath a baseball cap.
He walked directly to the closet, lifted the loose floorboard, and removed Daniel's cashbox.
Adeline leaned forward.
"That's the person who took the notebooks."
The man opened the box.
He removed three notebooks and the brass key.
Then he did something unexpected.
He put the notebooks back.
Adeline frowned.
"Wait."
Luca paused the video.
"He left them?"
"Yes."
"Then why were they gone when we arrived?"
Enzo's eyes narrowed.
"Because someone came later."
Luca resumed playback.
The man left with only the brass key.
Two hours passed.
Then the door opened again.
A second person entered.
A woman.
She wore a long dark coat and gloves.
Her face was uncovered.
Adeline stood so quickly she knocked into the table.
"No."
Camilla Ashford walked into the bedroom on the screen.
She crossed directly to the closet.
She lifted the floorboard without searching.
She removed the three notebooks.
Then she stood beside Adeline's bed and looked directly toward the hidden camera.
For three seconds, she smiled at it.
Luca paused the image.
No one spoke.
Enzo's face became terrifyingly calm.
"She knew the camera was there."
Adeline stared at Camilla's frozen smile.
"She wanted us to find this."
"Or she wanted whoever owned the camera to see her take them," Luca said.
Enzo looked at him.
"Why?"
"A message."
Adeline thought about Camilla's need for audiences.
Even when no one seemed to be watching, she performed.
"Keep going."
Luca resumed playback.
Camilla placed the notebooks inside her coat.
Before leaving, she pulled a folded piece of paper from her pocket and slid it beneath Adeline's pillow.
Adeline's hand went to her mouth.
"I never saw that."
"Police moved the bedding during the first search," Quinn said from the doorway.
They turned.
She had arrived without anyone noticing again.
"The pillow was bagged as part of the burglary scene."
"It is in evidence."
"Can you get the note?" Adeline asked.
Quinn held up a sealed bag.
"Already did."
Inside was a folded page.
The handwriting was not Daniel's.
It was Camilla's.
Adeline recognized it from staff place cards at the estate.
Quinn unfolded a photocopy.
The message contained only one sentence.
Your brother chose Enzo's father over you.
Adeline read it twice.
"What does that mean?"
Enzo looked toward the screen.
"Maybe nothing."
"Camilla does not do nothing."
Quinn agreed.
"We checked the notebook footage frame by frame."
"One cover had a label."
She enlarged a still photograph.
Daniel's handwriting appeared across the black notebook.
MATTEO - CONFESSIONS.
Enzo's face changed.
Adeline looked at him.
"Your father's confessions."
"Apparently."
"Did Daniel record him?"
"Maybe."
"Or document him."
Enzo stared at the title.
"If Camilla has that notebook, she has something my father was willing to hide Daniel to protect."
Quinn shook her head.
"We don't know that Matteo hid Daniel."
"The money says he paid St. Vincent's."
"The money says a Marchetti company paid the hospital."
"That distinction may be the only thing keeping you out of federal custody."
Luca received a call.
He stepped aside and listened.
Then he looked at Quinn.
"Your team found the camera at Gabriel's lake house."
Quinn nodded.
"And?"
"It was still transmitting."
"To where?"
"A private server."
"Location?"
Luca's eyes moved to Enzo.
"Marchetti estate."
Adeline felt the floor tilt beneath her.
Enzo did not move.
"Which device?"
"A hidden rack in the old wine cellar."
Quinn's hand went to her phone.
"Your federal friends did not find it?"
"Apparently not."
They returned to the estate at once.
Behind a false wall in the cellar, technicians found twelve receivers and a storage array containing months of surveillance footage.
Not installed by Luca.
Not listed on any security inventory.
One receiver was labeled A.C.
Adeline Croft.
Another was labeled L.P.
Leonard Pike.
Another E.S.
Evelyn Shaw.
Another G.S.
Gabriel Stone.
And one was labeled C.A.
Camilla Ashford.
Enzo stared at the rack.
"Someone has been using my house as the surveillance hub."
Luca's face was gray.
"For at least eighteen months."
Adeline looked at the dustless cables.
"Who has access to this cellar?"
"Senior household staff."
"Security."
"Family."
Enzo closed his eyes for a moment.
"Bellamy."
Luca nodded.
The missing household manager had access to every room and no reason to look suspicious carrying tools.
Quinn opened one of the archived video folders.
"We need warrants before we search this deeply."
Adeline saw a thumbnail.
Her heart stopped.
"Wait."
The thumbnail showed Daniel.
Not three years ago.
Not from an old news clip.
He was sitting in a room with white walls.
A digital date in the corner read three months earlier.
Adeline pointed.
"Open that."
Quinn hesitated.
Then clicked.
Daniel looked directly into the hidden camera.
He was gaunt.
His beard was longer.
But he was unmistakably alive.
For twenty seconds, he sat without moving.
Then someone entered the room.
The camera captured only a sleeve.
A woman's voice spoke.
"Your sister has started asking questions again."
Daniel's eyes filled with panic.
The voice continued.
"If she comes near Enzo Marchetti, we begin from the beginning."
Daniel whispered one word.
"Camilla."

The video ended.
