Chapter 18 - THE LAST THING DAVID HEARD

Maya refused for six days.
On the seventh, she changed her mind.
Not for David.
For Lily.
The meeting occurred behind glass at the detention center.
No physical contact.
No private conversation.
Everything recorded.
Marcus sat behind Maya.
David entered wearing a beige detention uniform.
He looked smaller than she remembered.
His hair had grown unevenly.
The tan was gone.
He picked up the phone.
Maya did not.
He waited.
Finally she lifted the receiver.
Neither spoke.
David's eyes filled with tears.
"Thank you for coming."
Maya's face remained still.
"You said you had information about Lily's last night."
He nodded.
"I do."
"Say it."
"Maya—"
"Do not use my name like we are married. Say it."
David looked down.
"The hospital called the yacht."
Maya frowned.
"I know."
"Not my phone. The yacht itself."
Her grip tightened on the receiver.
"Who answered?"
"The steward first. Then me."
"When?"
"Around one fifty."
Before Lily died.
"Who called?"
"A nurse."
Maya's heart began pounding.
"What did she say?"
David closed his eyes.
"She put Lily on."
The room vanished.
Maya could hear only blood rushing in her ears.
"What?"
"Lily was awake for a little while. She wanted to talk to me."
Maya's hand began shaking.
"You spoke to her?"
David nodded.
Maya stood halfway from the chair.
Marcus leaned forward but did not touch her.
"You spoke to her."
"Yes."
"And you still didn't call me."
David cried silently.
"What did she say?"
He looked through the glass.
"She said, 'Daddy, Mommy is scared.'"
Maya pressed one hand against her mouth.
"What else?"
"She asked when I was coming home."
"What did you tell her?"
David's face crumpled.
"I told her soon."
Maya closed her eyes.
"You lied to her too."
"Yes."
"What else?"
"She said she made me a bracelet at school."
Maya looked down at the silver bracelet on her own wrist.
Not that bracelet.
A different one.
A handmade one.
She remembered finding colored string in Lily's backpack after the funeral.
"And then?"
David could barely speak.
"She said she loved me."
Maya's tears finally fell.
"What did you say?"
"I said I loved her."
"Then why didn't you come home?"
David pressed his forehead against the glass.
"Because I was a coward."
Maya's voice turned hard.
"No."
He looked up.
"Cowardice is being afraid. You made decisions. Repeatedly."
"I know."
"You knew she might die."
"Yes."
"You knew telling the doctors could help."
"Yes."
"You heard her voice."
David sobbed.
"Yes."
"And you stayed."
"Yes."
Maya sat again.
For years, she had imagined there must be some missing explanation that would make David's absence comprehensible.
A dead phone.
A storm.
A misunderstanding.
There was no explanation.
There were only choices.
"Why did you want me to know this?"
David wiped his face.
"Because you should know she wasn't alone."
Maya stared at him.
"She was with me."
"I know."
"She was never alone."
David closed his eyes.
"I meant—"
"You meant you want credit for answering one call."
"No."
"Then why?"
He looked at her.
"Because the call was recorded by the yacht system."
Maya stopped.
"Where is it?"
"Victor's people deleted it from the main archive. But the captain kept a local backup after agents contacted him."
Marcus stood behind her.
David continued.
"The recording includes something else."
Maya's throat tightened.
"What?"
"After Lily hung up, Victor called through the same system."
"And?"
David looked at Marcus, then back at Maya.
"He told me not to return."
"We already know he pressured you."
"Not like this."
David swallowed.
"He said if I went home and disclosed the compound, he would make sure you were charged with administering it."
Maya's eyes narrowed.
"Using the forged consent."
"Yes."
"And that stopped you?"
David began crying again.
"I told myself I was protecting you."
Maya stared at him in disbelief.
"Do not do that."
"I know how it sounds."
"No. You do not get to turn abandonment into sacrifice."
David looked down.
Maya leaned closer to the glass.
"You were protecting yourself. You always protected yourself. Even now you are trying to place one clean motive inside a filthy decision."
David said nothing.
Maya put down the receiver.
Then she picked it up again.
"Where is Lily's bracelet?"
David looked confused.
"What?"
"The one she made you."
He closed his eyes.
"In my yacht bag. Evidence probably has it."
Maya looked at Marcus.
He nodded once.
She returned her gaze to David.
"You don't get it back."
David's face broke.
Maya hung up.
Outside, Marcus walked beside her in silence.
"Can you get the recording?"
She asked.
"We already requested the captain's backup."
"I want Lily's voice preserved."
"We will preserve it."
"Not for court."
Marcus looked at her.
"For me."
He nodded.
"We'll see what can legally be provided after discovery issues are handled."
Maya stopped walking.
"And the bracelet?"
"If it is David's property and evidence, return rules are complicated."
"It is Lily's gift."
"I know."
Maya gave him a tired look.
"More lawyer words?"
"Unfortunately."
For the first time in months, Maya smiled.
Only for a second.
Then Marcus's phone rang.
He answered.
His smile disappeared.
"When?"
He listened.
"Secure him. Nobody speaks to him alone."
Maya's stomach tightened.
"What now?"
Marcus ended the call.
"Victor Hale collapsed in detention."
"Heart attack?"
"Unknown."
"Is he alive?"
"Yes."
"Then why do you look like that?"
Marcus met her eyes.
May you like
"Because a preliminary screen shows tacrolimus in his blood."
