Chapter 16 - THE MEDICAL ALIBI
The phrase medical side produced a second search.
Agents went back through David's devices, Claire Benton's files, Hawthorne servers, and Nathan Crowe's recovered records.
For two days, nothing surfaced.
Then a forensic examiner found a deleted PDF embedded inside an old insurance archive.
The document was titled PARENTAL CONSENT - EXPERIMENTAL IMMUNE SUPPORT CONSULTATION.
Maya's name appeared at the bottom.
So did her signature.
Again.
The form stated that Maya had requested a private consultation about off-label immune-modulating compounds for Lily.
It was dated one month before the illness.
Claire Benton had countersigned it.
Maya stared at the page.
"Another planted document."
Marcus nodded.
"Likely."
"Likely?"
"Claire says it was fabricated at David's request. We still corroborate."
Maya pointed at the signature.
"Where did he get that one?"
"From a school medical release."
The pattern was becoming grotesquely clear.
David had built parallel histories.
One financial.
One medical.
If Maya discovered the trust, he could say she authorized it.
If Lily became seriously ill, he could say Maya sought experimental treatment.
He had planned not merely to commit wrongdoing.
He had planned to survive discovery.
"Victor told him to do this," Maya said.
"The cloud message suggests Victor instructed an insurance document, yes."
"Then arrest him."
"We need to establish the link between his instruction and the specific forged medical consent."
Maya stared at Marcus.
"You have a message saying create one for the medical side."
"A defense attorney will say it refers to legitimate documentation."
"And Claire?"
"Her testimony helps."
"Kerr?"
"Helps."
"Nathan?"
"Helps."
"Julianne?"
"Helps."
Maya laughed.
"Everyone helps, and Victor walks around in a suit."
Marcus did not disagree.
The breakthrough came from someone no one expected.
Evelyn Price.
She finally agreed to a full interview.
She admitted sending Button to Maya.
She had followed Calvin to the cemetery after discovering he had been paid through a Hawthorne-controlled account.
She saw the grave opened.
She saw a man place the metal case inside.
After the men left, she removed Button before the casket was resealed.
"Why?"
The prosecutor asked.
Evelyn looked ashamed.
"I panicked. I thought I needed something to prove I had seen it."
"Why not take the metal case?"
"Two men were still near the gate. I could only reach the edge of the casket before Calvin told me to leave."
"Why send the rabbit anonymously?"
"Because I believed Hawthorne watched me."
Maya watched from behind glass.
Evelyn continued.
"I wrote the note because I wanted Maya to know there was something else connected to the burial. I thought she would understand."
Maya shook her head.
"She expected a grieving mother to solve a riddle."
Marcus sighed.
"Fear makes people strange."
Then Evelyn offered something more valuable.
She had recorded Victor.
Not recently.
Six months earlier.
Evelyn had confronted him after discovering Julianne was becoming involved with David.
She did not know about Lily's dosing plan then.
She only knew Victor was using Julianne as a notary in suspicious transactions.
Evelyn secretly recorded the conversation on her phone.
The audio was imperfect but clear enough.
Victor's voice:
"David is useful because he mistakes appetite for intelligence."
Evelyn:
"And my daughter?"
Victor:
"Your daughter is useful because David mistakes admiration for love."
Evelyn:
"What happens when this falls apart?"
Victor laughed softly.
"David has been documenting Maya's instability for years. If the family side becomes inconvenient, she absorbs it."
Evelyn:
"And the child?"
A pause.
Victor:
"Children are the reason people sign things without reading."
Maya stopped the recording.
Her hands shook.
Marcus looked at her.
"That last line matters."
"It matters to me."
"It may matter to a jury too."
The prosecution now had Victor discussing Maya as a future scapegoat months before the crime.
Still, the most serious allegation remained difficult.
Did Victor know David would escalate the dosing against medical advice?
Claire said yes.
David said yes.
Victor said no.
Then Dr. Kerr produced the final piece.
Before fleeing, he had copied an internal Hawthorne call recording from a compliance archive.
The call occurred the night David decided to use tacrolimus.
Victor's voice was unmistakable.
David sounded panicked.
"Claire says don't extend it."
Victor answered.
"Claire is paid to describe risk, not make decisions."
David:
"If something happens to Lily—"
Victor:
"Then you will have a tragedy, not a transaction problem."
David:
"That isn't an answer."
Victor:
"It is the only answer you need. Finish what you started."
Maya listened once.
She could not listen twice.
Victor Hale was arrested forty-three minutes later.
The cameras captured him leaving Hawthorne in handcuffs.
