Chapter 4 - HIS BADGE, HER LIE

Ethan came to my hospital room at 5:18 p.m.
He did not knock.
Grace stopped him before he crossed the threshold.
“I said no.”
“I need five minutes.”
“You have had six years.”
“This is not your marriage.”
“No.”
Grace stepped closer.
“It is my sister’s hospital room.”
Ethan looked past her at me.
His turnout gear was gone.
He wore a black station T-shirt and jeans.
He looked showered.
Clean.
Almost normal.
That offended me more than the soot had.
“How is the baby?”
“Still inside me.”
His eyes closed briefly.
“Thank God.”
I stared at him.
“Which one?”
His face tightened.
“What?”
“Which thing are you thanking God for?”
“The baby.”
“Not that Claire only sprained her ankle?”
“Amelia.”
Grace looked at me.
“You want him gone?”
I shook my head.
“No.”
Ethan’s shoulders dropped with relief.
I hated that he mistook permission to speak for hope.
“Five minutes.”
Grace stayed beside the bed.
Ethan glanced at her.
“She does not need to be here.”
“She does.”
He nodded once.
Then he reached into his pocket.
My wedding ring rested in his palm.
“I have this.”
“I know.”
“Noah gave it to me.”
“I know.”
He stared at the diamond.
“You really meant it.”
“Yes.”
He closed his hand around it.
“Then I need to tell you everything before you decide.”
“I already decided.”
“Then before you make it permanent.”
I looked at the clock.
“Four minutes.”
He flinched.
“I went to the hotel because Claire threatened to come to our house.”
Grace’s expression sharpened.
“Why?”
“She wanted me to tell Amelia about Boston.”
“You mean about sleeping with her.”
Ethan looked at me.
“Yes.”
“How long have you been sleeping with Claire?”
“Once.”
Claire had said one night.
Ethan said once.
The wording mattered.
“Did you have sex one time or one night?”
His mouth opened.
Then closed.
Grace gave a humorless laugh.
“Impressive.”
“Twice.”
My heart did not break.
It had already broken.
This was just finding another piece on the floor.
“When?”
“Boston.”
“Both times?”
“Yes.”
“Same night?”
He looked down.
“Morning too.”
I nodded slowly.
“Thank you.”
His eyes lifted.
“For what?”
“For making sure there was absolutely nothing left to misunderstand.”
“Amelia, I ended it after Boston.”
“No.”
“I did.”
“You kept talking to her.”
“I told you.”
“You met her at my hotel.”
“To end the contact.”
“You went into a maintenance corridor.”
His face changed.
Grace noticed.
I watched the muscles in his jaw tighten.
“Why?”
“Claire said she had something there.”
“What?”
“My spare badge.”
“What badge?”
“My department access badge.”
Grace stepped forward.
“How did your mistress get your department badge?”
“She was not my mistress.”
I stared at him.
He looked at me.
Then he corrected himself.
“She was not an ongoing physical relationship.”
Grace laughed again.
I did not.
“How did Claire get your badge?”
Ethan rubbed a hand over his face.
“In Boston.”
“You left your department badge with her?”
“It was in my wallet.”
“You left your wallet with her?”
“I went downstairs for coffee.”
Grace’s expression was openly disgusted.
“And she took it?”
“She photographed it.”
“That is not the same as having it.”
“She later told me she had a copy.”
I felt cold.
“A copy.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“I do not know.”
“You are a firefighter.”
“Yes.”
“You carry a credential that can open emergency access points.”
“Yes.”
“And your ex-girlfriend copied it after you slept with her.”
He looked at the floor.
“Yes.”
The fetal monitor filled the silence.
Grace spoke first.
“Did you report the compromise?”
“No.”
“Why?”
Ethan’s eyes moved to me.
There it was.
The answer.
Because reporting it meant explaining Claire.
Because protecting his lie had mattered more than securing the credential.
I leaned back against the pillow.
“You risked your job to hide her.”
“I thought she was bluffing.”
“You risked other people.”
“I know.”
“No.”
My voice sharpened.
“You know now.”
He did not answer.
“What happened in the maintenance corridor?”
“Claire texted that she had the copy in an envelope behind a pipe.”
“That sounds insane.”
“It was.”
“And you went anyway.”
“Yes.”
“Did you find it?”
“Yes.”
“Where is it?”
“I destroyed it.”
Grace held up a hand.
“Stop.”
She moved closer.
“You found a duplicated emergency credential at a hotel, in a maintenance corridor, minutes before an elevator failed, and you destroyed it?”
Ethan looked at her.
“I panicked.”
“You keep using that word like it is a legal defense.”
“I did not sabotage the elevator.”
“Did I say you did?”
His face froze.
Grace and I looked at each other.
He had heard an accusation we had not made.
Ethan realized it too.
“Claire is going to say I did.”
My pulse quickened.
“What?”
“She is going to blame me.”
“For what?”
“I do not know exactly.”
“You came here because she threatened you?”
“She called after she left your room.”
“What did she say?”
“That if I tried to put this on her, she would tell investigators I asked her to get the badge copied.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Why would she say that?”
“Because she is angry.”
“Because you would not leave me?”
He looked at me.
“Yes.”
There was that word again.
Choice.
“How long has she wanted you to leave?”
“Since Boston.”
“And what did you tell her?”
“That I was not leaving my family.”
I almost laughed.
“You said family.”
He frowned.
“What?”
“You did not say wife.”
“Amelia.”
“Did you tell her you loved her?”
“No.”
“Did you tell her you loved me?”
Silence.
I watched his face.
“Did you?”
“I told her I was married.”
“That is not the same thing.”
“I was trying to end it.”
“Did you tell Claire you loved your wife?”
Ethan looked away.
The answer was no.
Something inside me became quiet.
Not numb.
Finished.
Grace looked at the clock.
“Time.”
Ethan took one step toward the bed.
“Please.”
I lifted my hand.
He stopped.
“Do you know what I kept thinking in the elevator?”
He stared at me.
“I kept thinking that you would come.”
My throat tightened, but I continued.
“I was not angry that you were not there yet.”
“I was proud of you.”
His face crumpled slightly.
“I told myself you were probably helping someone else.”
“I told myself that was who you were.”
I looked at the ring in his hand.
“Then the doors opened.”
He swallowed.
“And you showed me exactly who you were.”
“Amelia, I was terrified.”
“For Claire.”
“I saw her first.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“You saw both of us.”
His eyes reddened.
“I made the wrong call.”
“It was not a call.”
“What do you want me to call it?”
“A choice.”
He closed his eyes.
I turned toward Grace.
“I am done.”
She opened the door.
Ethan did not move.
“Please do not file anything yet.”
Grace’s eyes narrowed.
“You do not get to request a delay.”
“I am asking Amelia.”
I looked at him.
“You asked me to wait three months ago when I was bleeding.”
He went pale.
“I waited.”
I touched my stomach.
“I almost lost our son alone.”
My voice did not shake.
“I will never wait for you again.”
He left.
The door clicked shut.
I thought the worst part of the conversation was over.
Then my phone lit up.
A message from Claire.
One image.
No text.
I opened it.
It was a screenshot of a conversation between her and Ethan.
The date was six weeks earlier.
Claire: How much longer am I supposed to pretend Boston meant nothing?
Ethan: I told you I cannot do this while Amelia is pregnant.
Claire: That is not what you said in Room 814.
Ethan: Stop.
Claire: You said after the baby came, things would change.
Ethan: I said we would talk after the baby came.
Claire: Same difference.
Ethan: It is not.
I stared at the screen.
My vision narrowed.
Grace took the phone from my hand.
She read the messages once.
Then again.
“Room 814.”
I whispered the words.
Boston had not been one impulsive kiss.
It had not even been only one night.
It had come with a promise.
A conversation after my baby was born.
A future Claire believed she had been given.
Another message arrived from her.
Ask him what he promised me in Room 814.
Then another.
Ask him why he suddenly needed me gone before your son was born.
Grace looked at me.
“This could be manipulated.”
“Yes.”
“But Ethan admitted Boston.”
“Yes.”
“He admitted meeting her last night.”
“Yes.”
“He admitted the copied badge.”
“Yes.”
My hands went to my stomach.
My son moved beneath them.
I looked at the screenshot again.
After the baby came, things would change.
May you like
Until that moment, I had believed Claire was trying to steal my husband.
Now I began to wonder whether Ethan had spent months making sure she believed he had already been promised to her.
