Chapter 7 - THE FIRST PERSON WHO DISAPPEARED

The threat changed everything.
Until that moment, Maya had been a witness in a financial case and the grieving mother of a dead child.
Now she was a potential target.
Federal protection moved her before sunset.
No apartment.
No familiar route.
No personal car.
She was driven to a secure residence outside the city under an assumed guest name.
The house belonged to the government.
It contained generic furniture and framed photographs of landscapes no one cared about.
Maya hated it immediately.
"How long?"
She asked Marcus.
"Until we understand the threat."
"That is not an answer."
"It's the only one I have."
Maya set Lily's bracelet on the nightstand.
"David is in custody."
"Threats can be delegated."
"To Nathan?"
"Maybe."
"Julianne?"
"Unlikely now."
"Then who?"
Marcus looked at her.
"People with forty-eight million dollars at risk tend to have partners."
Maya sat on the edge of the bed.
"Who received the money?"
"Meridian Pacific Holdings."
"Who owns it?"
"On paper, a trust company in Belize. Behind that, we're still tracing."
"David doesn't set up offshore structures himself."
"Correct."
"Nathan?"
"Maybe."
Maya shook her head.
"You keep saying maybe because you don't believe it."
Marcus leaned against the dresser.
"I believe Nathan is involved. I do not believe he is the top of the structure."
"Who is?"
"We don't know."
Maya gave him a tired look.
"There it is again."
He almost smiled.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed instantly.
"Where?"
A pause.
"Any signs of forced entry?"
Another pause.
"I'm on my way."
Maya stood.
"What happened?"
Marcus hesitated.
"Nathan Crowe is missing."
"Missing?"
"Agents lost visual contact when he entered his underground garage. His vehicle was found two levels down. No Nathan."
"He escaped?"
"Maybe."
Maya did not comment on the word this time.
"Was he under arrest?"
"No. We didn't have enough yet."
"So he ran."
"Or someone took him."
That possibility chilled the room.
Marcus left two agents at the residence and drove back toward Chicago.
Maya spent the next three hours reading every document she had copied from David's office before the warrant sealed the house.
Most meant nothing to her.
Insurance schedules.
Share certificates.
Loan terms.
Property records.
Then she found a name repeated on three unrelated pages.
Hawthorne Fiduciary Services.
The company appeared as an escrow agent on one transaction.
A consulting vendor on another.
And a beneficiary administrator on an old Vance family trust.
Maya searched her memory.
She had heard David mention Hawthorne years ago.
His father had used them.
David's father, Richard Vance, had died before Maya and David married.
He was remembered publicly as a disciplined industrialist who built factories across the Midwest.
Privately, David described him as brutal.
Maya had believed that part.
She still did.
At 10:40 p.m., Marcus called.
"We found Nathan."
Maya stood.
"Alive?"
"Yes."
"Where?"
"O'Hare."
"He was fleeing."
"He was trying to board a private charter to Montreal."
"Arrest him."
"We did."
Maya exhaled.
"Did he say why he ran?"
"He says he received a threat."
"From David?"
"No."
"Then who?"
"Someone sent him a photograph of his wife leaving a grocery store."
Maya felt cold.
"What did the message say?"
Marcus read it.
"You drafted the doors. Do not tell them who holds the keys."
Maya looked down at the Hawthorne documents spread across the table.
"Marcus."
"Yes?"
"Ask Nathan about Hawthorne Fiduciary Services."
Silence.
"Why?"
"The name is everywhere."
"Send me pictures."
Maya photographed the pages and transmitted them through the secure app.
Twenty minutes later, Marcus called back.
"You were right."
"About what?"
"Nathan reacted to the name."
"What did he say?"
"Nothing at first. Then he asked for protective custody."
Maya's pulse quickened.
"In exchange for testimony?"
"He says he will cooperate if his family is protected."
"Against whom?"
Marcus hesitated.
"A man named Victor Hale."
Maya frowned.
"Who is Victor Hale?"
"That's what we are finding out."
Maya searched the documents again.
No Victor Hale.
Then she remembered something small.
A Christmas party eight years earlier.
David had been standing near the fireplace with an older man she had never met.
Tall.
Gray hair.
A scar near his jaw.
When Maya approached, both men stopped talking.
David introduced him only as Victor.
An old family friend.
Maya had forgotten him until now.
"I have seen him."
"Where?"
She told Marcus.
"Anything else?"
Maya closed her eyes.
There was something.
A sentence David said after Victor left.
My father trusted him more than he trusted blood.
Maya repeated it.
Marcus went silent.
"What?"
She asked.
"We just got preliminary ownership research on Hawthorne."
"And?"
"Victor Hale is chairman."
Maya stared at the papers.
"So David's father's old fiduciary controls the offshore structure?"
"Possibly."
"And Nathan is afraid of him."
"Very."
Maya sat slowly.
"What does Victor want?"
Marcus answered quietly.
"We think he wants the Maren shares."
"Why?"
"Because Hawthorne acquired a large short position against Maren Biomedical six months ago."
Maya's heart accelerated.
"If the merger happens, they lose."
"A lot."
"How much?"
"Potentially hundreds of millions."
Maya looked at Lily's bracelet on the nightstand.
A new shape formed around the facts.
David may have wanted her money.
But someone else may have wanted her family company to fail.
"Marcus."
"Yes?"
"What if the trust wasn't only designed to steal my shares?"
"Go on."
"What if it was designed to control how they voted in the merger?"
There was a long silence.
Marcus finally said, "I'll call you back."
He called again at 1:03 a.m.
His voice was different.
"Maya, do not leave that house."
"What happened?"
"The merger vote is in three days."
"I know."
"Your shares are enough to decide it."
Maya's mouth went dry.
"And according to the forged trust, who can vote them?"
Marcus answered.
"David."
Maya looked toward the dark window.
"David is in jail."
"The trust names a successor trustee if he becomes legally incapacitated."
Maya's fingers tightened around the phone.
"Who?"
May you like
Marcus exhaled slowly.
"Victor Hale."
