Chapter 8 - CAROLINE'S NAME

Ethan left the security room without saying another word.

Claire followed him through the basement corridor.

Richard did not.

Marcus remained behind with him.

The silence between the two older men was not the silence of strangers.

It was the silence of people who had protected the same secret for too long.

Upstairs, Ethan walked into the drawing room where the accusation had begun.

The buttons were gone now.

The evidence envelope had been locked in Daniel Pierce’s office.

But Ethan could still see where they had landed.

He could still see his father stagger.

Claire stopped behind him.

“Ethan.”

He lifted one hand.

“Not yet.”

She stayed quiet.

He walked to the window.

Rain streaked the glass.

Caroline had loved storms.

That thought arrived so suddenly that he almost lost his balance.

She used to open the bedroom windows when rain came in from the west.

She said the house sounded less like a museum when the weather was loud.

The night she died, there had been thunder over the harbor.

The police said she probably slipped on wet boards.

Ethan had believed them because the alternative was unthinkable.

Now the alternative had a name.

Sophia.

Claire stood several feet away.

“Did you know they knew each other?”

“No.”

“Did Sophia ever mention Caroline before you started dating?”

“No.”

“Did she say how she first heard about you?”

Ethan looked down.

“At a foundation gala.”

Claire’s expression tightened.

“What year?”

“Six years ago.”

“That is three years after Caroline died.”

“I know.”

He turned.

“I know, Claire.”

His voice was sharper than he intended.

Claire did not react.

Ethan rubbed both hands over his face.

“Everything I remember has to be checked now.”

He laughed once.

“It is like discovering your own memory has witnesses you never interviewed.”

Claire’s expression softened.

“You do not have to solve all of it tonight.”

“Yes, I do.”

“No.”

Ethan looked at her.

Claire stepped closer.

“You have been reacting for twenty-four hours.”

“You hit Dad.”

“You let Sophia push you into a board fight.”

“You answered every lie the second she threw it.”

Claire shook her head.

“That is exactly what she wants.”

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

“What do you suggest?”

“Stop reacting.”

He looked back toward the hallway.

“What is Dad hiding?”

Claire hesitated.

“Something.”

“What?”

“I do not know.”

“You were with him all day.”

“He did not tell me.”

Ethan gave a bitter smile.

“Of course not.”

Claire’s voice hardened.

“That does not make Sophia innocent.”

“I did not say it did.”

“You are angry at Dad.”

“I am furious at Dad.”

“You should be.”

Claire held his gaze.

“But do not let being furious at him make you stupid about her.”

Ethan looked away.

His phone vibrated.

A message from Sophia.

I KNOW YOU WATCHED IT.

Ethan stared at the screen.

A second message appeared.

RICHARD WANTED YOU TO SEE EXACTLY THAT VERSION.

Claire read over his shoulder.

“How does she know?”

Ethan typed nothing.

Sophia sent another message.

ASK HIM WHERE THE REST OF CAROLINE'S FILE IS.

Then another.

ASK HIM WHY THE POLICE NEVER SAW IT.

Ethan felt his pulse quicken.

Claire reached for the phone.

“Do not answer.”

He let her take it.

Sophia sent one final message.

IF YOU WANT THE TRUTH, COME ALONE.

A location pin appeared.

It was a hotel near the river.

Claire looked at Ethan.

“No.”

He stared at the location.

“She knows something.”

“She knows how to make you move.”

“She was with Caroline.”

“Then she can tell the police.”

“She will not.”

“That is her problem.”

Ethan took the phone back.

Claire stepped in front of him.

“If you go, she will record you.”

“I know.”

“She will provoke you.”

“I know.”

“She will use every sentence against Dad.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you putting on your coat?”

Ethan looked at her.

“Because this time I am going with a recorder too.”

The hotel bar was nearly empty when Ethan arrived.

Sophia sat in a corner booth wearing a black coat.

She had no visible luggage.

She looked smaller than she did at home.

More ordinary.

For years, Ethan had mistaken that ability for vulnerability.

Now he wondered if it was camouflage.

He sat across from her.

Sophia looked at his hands.

“No lawyers?”

“No.”

“No Claire?”

“No.”

“No father?”

Ethan stared at her.

“You asked me to come alone.”

She smiled faintly.

“I am surprised you listened.”

“I am trying something new.”

“What?”

“Listening before I decide who is guilty.”

The smile disappeared.

Sophia looked toward the window.

“You saw the video.”

“Yes.”

“So now you think I am a monster.”

“I think you staged an assault.”

Her eyes returned to him.

“I did.”

The admission was so direct that Ethan almost lost his prepared calm.

Sophia watched him.

“I knew the camera was recording locally.”

“Then why did you do it?”

“Because I thought I had removed the card.”

“You dropped it.”

“Yes.”

“You forged my signature.”

Sophia’s expression did not change.

“I used your credentials.”

“That is not an answer.”

“No.”

She leaned back.

“It is worse.”

Ethan felt anger rise.

He forced it down.

“Why?”

Sophia folded her hands.

“Because Richard was going to destroy me.”

“For stealing?”

“For telling you what happened to Caroline.”

Ethan’s chest tightened.

“You keep saying that.”

“Because it is the only thing in this family more dangerous than money.”

“Tell me.”

Sophia studied him.

“Your father got to the marina before the police.”

“I know that.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You know what he told you.”

Ethan waited.

Sophia lowered her voice.

“Caroline was alive when Richard arrived.”

Ethan stopped breathing.

Sophia’s eyes did not leave his.

“He spoke to her.”

“That is a lie.”

“Ask him.”

“He told police he found her in the water.”

“Yes.”

“He tried to save her.”

Sophia’s face tightened.

“Eventually.”

Ethan leaned forward.

“What does that mean?”

Sophia looked down at her hands.

“Caroline had a folder with her.”

“What folder?”

“Evidence.”

“Against you?”

“Against more than me.”

Ethan’s voice sharpened.

“Who?”

Sophia looked up.

“You.”

Ethan stared at her.

She continued before he could speak.

“Caroline had found unauthorized foundation payments connected to your executive office.”

“I did not steal from the foundation.”

“I did not say you did.”

“Then what are you saying?”

“I am saying your signature was already being used before Caroline died.”

Ethan felt cold.

“That makes no sense.”

“It will.”

Sophia leaned closer.

“Your father found Caroline on the dock after she confronted me.”

Ethan’s hands tightened under the table.

“She had fallen into the water once and climbed back out.”

“She was injured.”

“She was alive.”

“Stop.”

“She told Richard what she found.”

“Stop.”

“She told him someone had been using your approvals.”

Ethan stood.

Sophia did not move.

“She told him the fraud could destroy you.”

Ethan stared down at her.

“And Richard chose the company.”

“What did he do?”

Sophia’s voice became quiet.

“He took the folder.”

Ethan’s face drained.

“And then?”

Sophia held his gaze.

“He left her there.”

Ethan stepped backward.

“No.”

“Ask Marcus why Caroline called him.”

“No.”

“Ask Marcus who told him not to call the police.”

Ethan turned away.

Sophia’s voice followed him.

“Ask your father why he paid the marina witness three hundred thousand dollars.”

Ethan stopped.

He did not turn around.

Sophia spoke one final sentence.

“Then ask him why the original police report says Caroline’s body was warm when the first officer pulled her from the water.”

Ethan left the hotel.

He did not know whether any of it was true.

That was the most unbearable part.

Sophia had already lied about something enormous.

But liars were most dangerous when they possessed one truth no one else wanted to tell.

When Ethan returned to the estate, Richard was in the library.

He did not look surprised to see him.

Ethan closed the door.

“Was Caroline alive when you reached the marina?”

Richard looked at him.

For five seconds, he said nothing.

May you like

Ethan felt the answer before it came.

“Yes.”
