Chapter 7 - WHAT THE CAMERA SAW

Claire did not open the folder marked ETHAN - DO NOT TELL HIM YET.
Not immediately.
Her finger hovered over the trackpad.
Richard stood behind her with both hands resting on the back of the chair.
The folder name felt less like a label and more like an accusation.
Claire looked up at him.
“Did you create this?”
“No.”
“Do you know what is inside?”
“No.”
“Then why are you looking at it like you do?”
Richard said nothing.
Claire turned back to the screen.
“I am opening it.”
Richard’s hand moved.
He almost stopped her.
Then he withdrew it.
“Do it.”
The folder contained nine files.
Three spreadsheets.
Two scanned documents.
One photograph.
Three audio files.
Claire clicked the photograph first.
It showed Caroline Whitmore standing outside the Whitmore Foundation offices almost ten years earlier.
Caroline was smiling at someone outside the frame.
Behind her, partially reflected in a glass door, stood a dark-haired woman.
Claire leaned closer.
Richard’s face hardened.
The reflection was blurry.
But the woman’s profile was familiar.
Sophia.
Claire whispered the name.
Richard did not answer.
Claire opened the image properties.
The photo had been taken nine months before Caroline died.
She looked at her father.
“Sophia said she met Ethan six years ago.”
Richard nodded slowly.
“That is what Ethan believes.”
“She knew Caroline before that.”
“Yes.”
Claire opened the first spreadsheet.
It was a list of foundation payments from ten years earlier.
Several vendor names were highlighted.
The amounts were smaller than the Northstar transfers.
Ten thousand.
Twenty-two thousand.
Forty thousand.
But they followed the same pattern.
Invoices approved during travel periods.
Payments routed through temporary entities.
Signatures belonging to executives who were not physically present.
At the bottom of the sheet was a note.
CAROLINE FLAGGED THESE.
S.K. HAD ACCESS.
Claire felt a chill.
“S.K.”
Richard’s voice was quiet.
“Sophia Kane.”
Claire opened one of the audio files.
A woman’s voice filled the room.
Jenna Cole.
“I’m recording this because I don’t trust email anymore.”
There was rustling in the background.
“If anything happens, Sophia Kane is not who Ethan thinks she is.”
Claire looked at Richard.
The recording continued.
“She was working with donor relations under a consulting arrangement before Caroline died.”
“She had access to executive calendars, donor files, and event credentials.”
“Caroline discovered irregular payments and started asking questions.”
“I was junior staff then.”
“I did not understand what I was looking at.”
A pause.
“Years later, when Northstar started, I recognized the structure.”
“I recognized the approval timing.”
“And I recognized Sophia.”
The recording ended.
Claire pressed her palms against her face.
“This is enough to go to the police.”
Richard shook his head.
“For financial fraud, perhaps.”
“For Caroline?”
“No.”
Claire lowered her hands.
“You heard that.”
“I heard a suspicion.”
“There is a photograph.”
“A photograph proving they occupied the same building.”
Claire stared at him.
“You are doing it again.”
“Doing what?”
“Demanding courtroom proof before allowing yourself to say what you already believe.”
Richard’s expression tightened.
“That habit kept this family out of prison more than once.”
Claire stood.
“And maybe it kept Ethan in the dark when he needed the truth.”
The words struck him.
Claire knew they did.
She turned back to the laptop.
“Open the camera card.”
Richard frowned.
“Marcus has not broken the encryption.”
“He called while you were upstairs.”
Richard looked at her.
Claire held up her phone.
“He found the key in the local device certificate.”
They drove to the estate security room together.
Marcus was waiting.
Ethan was already there.
Claire stopped in the doorway.
He looked exhausted.
Richard stopped behind her.
For a second, father and son looked at each other.
Neither spoke.
Marcus broke the silence.
“I recovered the last recording.”
Ethan turned toward the monitor.
“How much?”
“Sixteen minutes and forty-two seconds.”
Richard walked into the room.
“Does it include the incident?”
Marcus nodded.
“All of it.”
Sophia was not there.
Ethan had not told her about the card.
Marcus dimmed the lights.
Then he pressed play.
The drawing room appeared on-screen.
The timestamp read 8:38:04 PM.
Richard entered first.
He carried the black briefcase.
He placed it on the desk.
Sophia entered twenty seconds later.
She closed the door behind her.
On-screen, Richard spoke.
“I want you to explain Northstar.”
Sophia laughed.
“I don’t know what you mean.”
Richard opened the briefcase.
He removed several documents.
“You know exactly what I mean.”
Sophia looked at the pages.
Her smile disappeared.
“Where did you get those?”
“That is not the important question.”
“It is to me.”
Richard placed a bank record on the desk.
“Two point four million dollars.”
Sophia’s face hardened.
“You went through Ethan’s accounts?”
“No.”
“You have no right.”
“I have every right to investigate theft from a foundation bearing my name.”
The room watching the footage became completely silent.
On-screen, Sophia crossed her arms.
“You think I stole it.”
“I think someone did.”
“And you called me here because you already decided it was me.”
Richard tapped another document.
“Rebecca Sloan.”
Sophia did not react.
Richard watched her closely.
“She notarized an invoice approval using Ethan’s credentials while he was in Singapore.”
Sophia’s eyes narrowed.
“He signs things remotely.”
“Not from a device located in this house.”
For the first time, Sophia looked uncertain.
Richard continued.
“I traced Rebecca to Northstar.”
Sophia stepped closer.
“You need to stop.”
Richard’s voice stayed calm.
“I have not started.”
Sophia stared at him.
Then Richard said the sentence that changed everything.
“You know what happened to Caroline.”
Ethan flinched beside the monitor.
On-screen, Sophia’s face became completely still.
Richard continued.
“I know you were at the foundation before she died.”
Sophia looked toward the door.
“I am leaving.”
Richard moved between her and the door.
He did not touch her.
The video made that unmistakable.
“I want an answer.”
“Move.”
“Did Caroline discover the same scheme?”
Sophia’s breathing changed.
“Move.”
“Did she confront you?”
Sophia’s eyes filled with anger.
“You have no idea what Caroline discovered.”
Ethan’s hand clenched beside him.
On-screen, Richard stared at Sophia.
“What does that mean?”
Sophia smiled.
It was small and ugly.
“It means if you drag that dead woman into this, Ethan will learn what you did too.”
Richard’s face changed.
Claire looked sharply at her father in the security room.
Richard did not look away from the monitor.
On-screen, Sophia stepped closer to him.
“You should have let the past stay buried.”
Richard’s voice dropped.
“I buried nothing.”
Sophia whispered, “That is not what Marcus remembers.”
Marcus stopped breathing.
Everyone turned toward him.
He stared at the screen.
Ethan saw it.
“What does she mean?”
Marcus did not answer.
The video continued.
Richard said, “Leave Marcus out of this.”
Sophia laughed once.
“Too late.”
Then she walked away from Richard.
She checked the hallway through the partially opened door.
No one was there.
She closed it.
She reached up and deliberately pulled pins from her hair.
Her hair fell messily around her shoulders.
Ethan’s face drained.
Sophia grabbed the front of her blouse.
She tore one button free.
Then another.
Then a third.
One button rolled beneath the desk.
Richard stared at her.
“Sophia.”
She looked at him.
“What are you doing?”
Sophia raked both hands through her hair.
Then she scratched the side of her own neck.
Richard stepped backward.
“Sophia, stop.”
She grabbed the camera housing with one hand and reached underneath it.
Her finger jerked.
She hissed in pain.
Blood appeared at the edge of her nail.
She removed the microSD card.
Then she dropped it while trying to put it into her pocket.
It skittered beneath the desk.
Sophia looked down.
Before she could retrieve it, voices sounded in the hallway.
Her eyes widened.
She stepped backward.
She wrapped both arms around herself.
Then she screamed.
“HELP!”
Richard’s face on the recording looked stunned.
“GET AWAY FROM ME!”
The door burst open.
Ethan entered first.
The rest was exactly as Richard remembered.
Exactly as Ethan feared.
Ethan crossed the room in three strides.
He saw Sophia crying.
He saw the torn blouse.
He saw his father.
Then he slapped him.
The video captured Richard staggering sideways.
It captured Ethan shouting.
It captured Richard saying nothing.
Then Richard looked toward the camera.
He raised one trembling hand.
He pointed.
The recording ended twelve seconds later when the deletion command was issued.
No one moved.
Ethan stared at the black screen.
His face was wet.
He did not seem to realize he was crying.
Richard looked at him once.
Then he looked away.
Claire spoke first.
“Marcus.”
Marcus remained seated.
His face was gray.
Claire’s voice hardened.
“What did Sophia mean when she said that is not what you remember?”
Marcus swallowed.
“I don’t know.”
Richard turned toward him.
“Yes, you do.”
Marcus looked at Richard.
Ethan slowly turned from the monitor.
“What happened the night Caroline died?”
Marcus stood.
“I was not there.”
Sophia’s words from the recording seemed to hang above them.
That is not what Marcus remembers.
Ethan stepped closer.
“Were you working for my father then?”
“Yes.”
“In what capacity?”
“Junior security.”
“Did you know Caroline?”
“Yes.”
“Did she call you?”
Marcus did not answer.
Ethan’s voice sharpened.
“Did my wife call you the night she died?”
Marcus’s eyes moved toward Richard.
That was enough.
Ethan turned on his father.
“You knew.”
Richard’s face hardened.
“Ethan.”
“You knew Marcus was involved.”
“I knew he received a call.”
“When?”
Richard said nothing.
Ethan’s voice broke.
“When?”
Marcus answered for him.
“Eleven forty-two.”
Ethan stared at him.
Marcus swallowed.
“Caroline called me at eleven forty-two the night she died.”
“Why?”
“She said she was at the marina.”
“What else?”
Marcus looked at Richard again.
May you like
Richard closed his eyes.
Marcus finally said, “She told me Sophia was there.”
